Psychedelic Music vom Feinsten, yeah. Strawberry Alarm Clock kam aus Los Angeles, Kalifornien und entstand 1967 aus den beiden Bands Thee Sixpence und Waterfyrd Traene. Die Band setzte sich anfänglich aus den Musikern Mark Weitz (Organ, Piano, Harpsichord, Vocals), Ed King (Guitar, Vocals), Lee Freeman (Guitar, Bass, Harmonica, Drums, Vocals, Woodwinds), George Bunnell (Bass, Vocals), Gary Lovetro (Bass, Vocals), Randy Seol (Drums, Bongos, Vibraphone, Vocals), und Steve Bartek (Flute) zusammen, wobei George Bunnell und Steve Bartek meist für das Songwriting verantwortlich waren. Strawberry Alarm Clock unterschrieb einen Plattenvertrag bei Uni Records und 1967 erschien das erste Album "Incense And Peppermints". Mit der ausgekoppelten Single "Incense And Peppermints / The Birdman Of Alkatrash" hatte Strawberry Alarm Clock sofort einen Number One-Hit in den USA. Im Jahr 1968 brachte die Band dann gleich 2 Alben auf den Markt, "Wake Up... It’s Tomorrow" und "The World In A Sea Shell". Obwohl beide sehr gelungen sind, konnten sie an den anfänglichen Erfolg nicht anschließen. Die wunderbare Single "Sit With The Guru / Pretty Song From Psych-Out" schaffte es nur auf Platz 65 der US Billboard-Charts. Steve Bartek, Gary Lovreto, Randy Seol und George Bunnell verließen nach diesen 3 Alben die Band und neu dazu kamen Jimmy Pitman (Vocals Guitar) und Gene Gunnels (Drums). Als auch das vierte Album "Good Morning Starshine" 1969 floppte, lösten sich Strawberry Alarm Clock vorerst auf. Im Jahr 1970 verwendete Russ Meyer in seinem Kultfilm "Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls" Musik von Strawberry Alarm Clock und Mitte der 70er Jahre gab die Band, auf das Trio George Bunnell, Steve Bartek und Randy Seol geschrumpft, wieder ein paar Konzerte. Danach war für längere Zeit Funkstille, doch 1982 kehrte Strawberry Alarm Clock wieder auf die Popbühnen der Welt zurück und musizierte für uns mit ständig wechselnden Line-Up bis zur nächsten Auflösung 2001. Bereits 2003 gings aber wieder weiter und tut es noch immer, Strawberry Alarm Clock ist on tour. Im Jahr 2012 erschien beim Label Global Recording Artists sogar ein neues Album, yeah, "Wake Up Where You Are". Die Band besteht nun aus Mark Weitz, Randy Seol, George Bunnell, Steve Bartek und Howie Anderson (Guitar, Vocals). Die Songs "Incense And Peppermints" und "Sit With The Guru" sind auch noch immer Teil ihres Live-Programms und erfreuen alte sowie neue Fans. Okay, wirklich aufregend ist das nicht mehr, aber die ersten 2 Alben waren great und Album 3 und 4 waren auch durchaus hörenswert. Der Song "Sit With The Guru" stammt vom zweitem Album "Wake Up... It’s Tomorrow", das 1997 bei Universal Records als CD neu aufgelegt wurde. So, das Schlusswort kommt diesmal von der Hamburger DJane und Produzentin Helena Hauff: Im Grunde kann ich jede Art von Musik gut leiden, solange sie bloß keine gute Laune verbreitet. Kann ich unterschreiben, haha, obwohl es durchaus tolle Musik gibt, die durchaus gute Laune verbreitet, anders eben, als das, was man landläufig als gute Laune versteht. Alles klar?!
