Die Stimme allein ist schon der Hit, yeah, und dazu tutet dann noch the sailor's hornpipe, yeah yeah yeah, und ha ha ha: I'm Popeye the Sailor Man, / I'm Popeye the Sailor Man. / I'm strong to the finich / Cause I eats me spinach. / I'm Popeye the Sailor Man. Den Song hat Sammy Lerner 1933 für die Fleischer Studios und ihrem ersten Popey Cartoon "Popey the Sailor" geschrieben. Billy Costello arbeitete damals bereits für die Fleischer Studios und zwar als Stimme für Gus the Gorilla in der Betty Boop Radio Show. Ja, und 1933 wurde er dann für vierundzwanzig Popey Shorts die Stimme von Popey the Sailor Man. Die letzte Folge in der Billy Costello sprach, lachte und sang war "You Gotta Be A Football Star" im Jahr 1935. Danach wurde er von den Fleischer Studios wegen bad behavior gefeuert: I'm one tough Gazookus / Which hates all Palookas / Wot ain't on the up and square. / I biffs 'em and buffs 'em / And always out roughs 'em / But none of 'em gets nowhere. Billy Costello wurde durch Jack Mercer ersetzt, der Popeye bis Anfang der 40er Jahre für die Fleischer Studios sprach, dann bis 1957 für die Paramount Studios sowie für eine Serie von Fernsehcartoons für das King Feature Syndicate, und 1978 nochmals für eine von William Hanna und Joseph Barbera produzierte Saturday Morning Cartoon Show. Wow, und 1959/60 sprach er auch Felix the Cat. Doch Billy Costello blieb der Mann mit dem Novelty-Hit: If anyone dares to risk my 'Fisk', / It's 'Boff’ an' it's 'Wham' un'erstan'? / So keep 'Good Be-hav-or' / That's your one life saver / With Popeye the Sailor Man. William 'Billy' Costello wurde 1898 geboren und verstarb 1971 in San Jose, Kalifornien. Weitere Noveltyhits von Billy Costello waren "Blow The Man Down" 1935, "Let's All Sing Like The Birdies Sing" 1938 und "Barnacle Bill The Sailor", ebenfalls 1938. Der Song "I'm Popeye The Sailor Man" ist auf der 1999 bei ASV Records erschienenen CD "Vintage Children's Favorites: 1926-1950" zu finden.
