July wurde in den frühen 60er Jahren in London als Skifflegroup The Playboys gegründet, als sich die Musik mehr in Richtung Rhythm’n’Blues entwickelte, änderte die Band den Namen in The Thoughts, bald darauf in The Tomcats und schließlich wurde die Psychedelic Band July aus ihr. Hmm, in einer anderen Biografie der Band steht zu lesen, dass sie in den frühen 60er Jahren als The Dreamers gegründet wurde, Gitarrenmusik im Stile der Shadows spielte und sich schließlich, als die Band Freddie & The Dreamers bekannt wurde, in The Tomcats umbenannt hat. Egal. Die Tomcats tourten 1966 bis 1968 hauptsächlich durch Spanien und nach ihrer Rückkehr nach London nannten sie sich schließlich in July um. Die Band bestand nun aus Tom Newman (Vocals, Guitar), Jon Field (Vocals, Flute, Organ), Tony Duhig (Guitar, Organ), Alan James (Bass) und Chris Jackson (Drums, Organ). Im Jahr 1968 erschien das Debütalbum "July" sowie die beiden Singles "My Clown / Dandelion Seeds" und "Hello, Who’s There? / The Way" beim Label Major Minor. Their sound was a mix of trippy, lugubrious psychedelic meanderings, eerie, trippy vignettes... with some dazzling guitar workouts, schreibt Bruce Eder bei www.allmusic.com. Großer Erfolg war diesen Veröffentlichungen nicht beschieden und July löste sich 1969 auf. Tom Newman wurde producer und engineer für Mike Oldfield und veröffentlichte mehrere Soloalben, Tony Duhig und Jon Field spielten nach dem Ende von July in der Progrock Band Jade Warrior und Alan James spielte seinen Bass unter anderen für Cat Stevens oder Kevin Coyne. Im Jahr 1995 erschien bei Essex Records die CD "The Second Of July", dabei handelt es sich aber nicht um ein zweites Album von July, sondern um eine Compilation mit Songs vom ersten Album und unveröffentlichtem Songmaterial aus dem Jahr 1968. Aber es gab schließlich doch noch ein zweites Album von July, 2009 wurde die Band von Tom Newman, Alan James, Chris Jackson und Peter Cook (Vocals, Guitar) wiederbelebt und 2014 erschien dann das zweite Album "Resurrection" bei Neddysongs Recordings. Der Song "Dandelion Seeds" ist auf der 1992 bei Sequel Records erschienenen 3-CD-Box "The Psychedelic Years 1966-1969" zu finden. Im Buch "Popular Music Genres: An Introduction" von Stuart Borthwick und Ron Moy steht über Psychedelic Music zu lesen: Psychedelic music was built upon elements contained in a wide range of pop and non-pop genres: beat, R&B, 1960s' garage, jazz, folk, classical, certain north African and Eastern musical idioms and avant-garde experimentalism. Its willing embrace of new technologies and production processes acted to radically change the sound palette, the subject matter and the artistic ambition of mainstream pop. Psychedelic music was influential in establishing the notion that recordings and performances were separate entities, which fed directly into the construction of the binary opposition of rock/pop in the late 1960s.
