Funk von Bobby Williams, yeah. Bobby Williams was not so much a James Brown copyist but a guy who really seemed to think he was James Brown. Über Bobby Williams ist nicht viel Information zu finden. Er war Sänger, hugh. Er spielte Organ und Piano, hugh. Habe im Netz aber auch ein Bild von ihm gefunden, wo er eine Gitarre umgehängt hat. Egal. Bobby Williams hatte 1974 mit "Funky Superfly" einen kleinen Hit in den USA, hugh. Bobby Williams stammt angeblich aus Orlando, Florida und landete Anfang der 70er Jahre in Chicago. Wann er genau geboren wurde und ob er noch lebt, konnte ich nicht herausfinden. Annette Johnson, angeblich seine Schwester, sagt über ihn: He had a heart of gold, he'd give you his last. Once you were his friend, he will be your friend till the end. He was there for everybody. Seine musikalische Laufbahn begann jedenfalls Anfang der 60er Jahre mit Singles wie "Just A Fool (Is All I Am) / So Many Women" 1960, "I’m Depending On You / Tell It To My Face" 1962 oder "Play A Sad Song / Try Love" 1964. Ende der 60er gings dann mit der Band Bobby Williams & His Mar-Kings weiter, die die Singles "Darling, Here Is My Heart / All The Time", "It's A Dilly / All Around The World" und "Let's Work A While / You're A Foolish Fool" veröffentlichte. In den 70er Jahren erschienen von Bobby Williams die 2 Funkalben "Funky Superfly" 1974 und "Anybody Can Be A Nobody" 1976 sowie einige Singles, gleichzeitig war er aber auch mit der Funkband Miami unterwegs, die aus den Musikern Robert Moore (Vocals), Andrew Curran (Guitar), Warren Thompson (Guitar), Bobby Williams (Organ), Willie Jackson (Bass), George Perry (Bass), Willie Clarke (Percussion) und Freddie Scott (Drums) bestand. Miami veröffentlichte in den 70er Jahren bei Drive Records die Alben "The Party Freaks" 1974, "Notorious Miami" 1976 und "Miami" 1978. Die Band löste sich Anfang der 80er Jahre auf. Von Bobby Williams erschien dann noch 1984 bei Nickelodeon Records die Single "Starting All Over Again", danach ist nichts mehr von und über Bobby Williams zu finden. Merkwürdig, aber wahr. Im Jahr 2008 erschien bei Jazzman Records die tolle CompilationCD "Bobby Williams Funky Super Fly - Explodes Across The Nation Like The Atom Bomb", darauf befindet sich natürlich auch der Song "Funky Superfly (Pts.1&2)". Jazzman Records schreibt über Bobby Williams: Thousands of bands recorded funk music bearing more than a resemblance to not only his music, but his vocal style too, though none came so close as being a James Brown clone as did Bobby Williams. That's not to say Bobby Williams spent his time perfecting cover versions of "Cold Sweat" and "Sex Machine". What Bobby did was pay homage to the Godfather by creating "Funky Superfly" and "Soul Brother Party". It wasn't exactly a "Brand New Bag", but it was certainly "A Bag of his Own" - and he did it so well even James Brown himself gave his respect. Hmm, aber wo steckt Bobby Williams? By the late 50s he was based in Orlando, Florida and proceeded to make a name for himself as Bobby Williams. As his music career wound up in the 80s, Bobby often worked as a chef back in Orlando before passing away in 1992. Hmm, waren Robert Moore und Bobby Williams von Miami eine Person? Robert Moore, der Sänger von Miami, wurde laut discogs.com 1944 geboren und starb 2012 im Alter von 68 Jahren, irgendwie kann da was nicht stimmen. Egal, jedenfalls hab ich noch eine Single von Bobby Williams entdeckt, er hat bereits 1958 als Bobby Williams & His Nightlifters bei Cort Records die Single "If Dreams Could Come True / Tarzan" veröffentlicht. Die B-Side ist besser als die A-Side, man kann sich bei youtube davon überzeugen, hugh.
