Die Dexys Midnight Runners wurden 1978 von Kevin Rowland (Vocals, Guitar) und Kevin Archer (Guitar, Vocals) in Birmingham, England gegründet. Beide spielten davor in der Punkband The Killjoys. Im Jahr 1979 erschien die erste Single "Dance Stance / I’m Just Looking" bei Oddball Records. Die Band bestand nun aus Kevin Rowland, Kevin Archer, Pete Saunders (Piano, Organ), Pete Williams (Bass, Vocals), Bobby Junior (Drums), Steve Spooner (Alto Sax), Geoff Blythe (Tenor Sax) und Big Jim Paterson (Trombone). Bereits nach dieser Single gab Bobby Junior die Drumsticks an Andy Growcott weiter. Das Debütalbum "Searching For The Young Soul Rebels" erschien 1980 bei EMI Records und die Band erreichte mit dem Song "Geno" Platz 1 in Großbritannien und Platz 2 in Irland. Der Zeiger stand auf Erfolg, doch die Band feierte nicht, sondern löste sich auf. Naja, nicht ganz, Kevin Rowland und Big Jim Paterson beschlossen als Dexys Midnight Runners weiterzumachen und scharten neue Musiker*innen um sich. Die Band bekam einen neuen Vertrag bei Mercury Records und 1982 erschien das Album "Too-Rye-Ay", mit einer Mischung aus Blue Eyed Soul und Celtic Folk. Die Dexys Midnight Runners waren nun Kevin Rowland, Big Jim Paterson, Kevin Adams (Banjo, Guitar), Mickey Billingham (Organ, Piano, Accordion), Giorgio Kilkenny (Bass), Seb Shelton (Drums), Paul Speare (Flute, Tenor Sax, Tin Whistle) und Brian Maurice (Alto Sax). Als Verstärkung waren bei den Aufnahmen noch The Emerald Express, bestehend aus Helen O’Hara (Violin) und Steve Brennan (Violin), sowie die Sisters Of Scarlet, bestehend aus den Sänger*innen Carol Kenyon, Katie Kissoon und Sam Brown, mit dabei. Mit dem Song "Come On Eileen" gelang der Band gleich der nächste große Hit, wow, Nummer 1 in Großbritannien, Irland, Australien und den USA. Auch nach diesem Hit ging die Band fast zu Bruch. Zumindest blieben diesmal 3 Musiker am Ball, Kevin Rowland, Kevin Adams und Big Jim Paterson. Helen O’Hara von The Emerald Express wurde nun fixes Bandmitglied und neu dazu kamen Julian Litman (Mandolin), Tom Evans (Steel Guitar), Robert Noble (Organ, Synthesizer), Vincent Crane (Piano), John 'Rhino' Edwards (Bass), Tim Dancy (Drums) und Nick Gatfield (Saxophone, Vocals). Bei Vincent Crane handelt es sich um den Organisten der 60er Jahre Band The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown. Im Jahr 1985 erschien das dritte Album "Don’t Stand Me Down" bei Mercury Records, doch der Erfolg blieb diesmal aus. Kevin Rowland: I felt that we couldn't do anything better than "Don't Stand Me Down". It took so much out of me, but the record company threw the towel in. I think they wanted to teach me a lesson. Okay, 1987 lösten sich die Dexys Midnight Runners auf, nachdem sie zum Trio Kevin Rowland, Helen O’Hara und Kevin Adams geschrumpft waren. Kevin Rowland versuchte eine Solokarriere, die aber eher ein Fiasko wurde, naja, immerhin 2 Soloalben gibt es von ihm, "The Wanderer" 1988 bei Mercury Records und "My Beauty" 1999 bei Creation Records. Im Jahr 2003 versuchte es Kevin Rowland dann wieder mit neuen Dexys Midnight Runners. Die Band bestand nun aus Kevin Rowland, Pete Williams, Philip Blakeman (Guitar, Accordion), Neil Hubbard (Guitar), Lucy Morgan (Violin, Viola), Mick Talbot (Keyboards), Volker Janssen (Keyboards), Julian Crampton (Bass), Crispin Taylor (Drums) und Paul Taylor (Trombone). Der Name Dexys Midnight Runners wurde 2011 schließlich auf Dexys gekürzt. Seither sind noch die Alben "One Day I’m Going To Soar" 2012, "Nowhere Is Home" 2014 und "Let The Record Show: Dexys Do Irish And Country Soul" 2016 erschienen. Die aktuelle Besetzung lautet Kevin Rowland, Lucy Morgan, Sean Read (Keyboards, Saxophone, Guitar, Vocals), Michael Timothy (Keyboards), Andy Hobson (Bass), Billy Stookes (Drums) und Mark Kavuma (Trumpet). Okay, wieviele Musiker*innen Kevin Rowland in den nächsten Jahren als Dexys noch um sich scharen wird steht in den Sternen, ist aber eigentlich auch egal, da Kevin Rowland Dexy ist. Der Song "I Couldn’t Help If I Tried" ist auf dem Album "Searching For The Young Soul Rebels" zu finden, das 2000 bei EMI Records als CD wiederveröffentlicht wurde.
