Der Song wurde oft gecovert, die berühmteste Version stammt wohl von der Band Vanilla Fudge 1968, die ihn auf ihrem dritten Album "Renaissance" in einer Länge von 8'40" darboten. Im Original von Donovan hat der Song eine Länge von 4'56". Ebenfalls 1968 übertraf aber Terry Reid mit seiner Version des Songs auf seinem ersten Album "Bang, Bang You’re Terry Reid" Vanilla Fudge mit 10'09", yeah. Produzent bei der Aufnahme von Donovan sowie bei Terry Reid war Mickey Most, der 1969 sein eigenes Label RAK Records gründete und in den 70er Jahren mit dem Songwriter-Duo Mike Chapman und Nicky Chinn eine Menge Hits für The Sweet, Suzie Quatro, Mud, Smokie und und und ... produzierte. Weitere hörenswerte Versionen des Songs "Season Of The Witch" stammen von Joan Jett & The Blackhearts 2004 und The Strangelings 2007. Donovan wurde 1946 als Donovan Leitch in Glasgow, Schottland geboren und startete seine musikalische Laufbahn 1965 bei Pye Records mit dem Album "What’s Bin Did And What’s Bin Hid". Der als Single ausgekoppelte Song "Catch The Wind" wurde sein erster großer Hit, yeah, auf der B-Side befand sich der Song "Why Do You Treat Me Like You Do". Im Jahr 1966 wechselte er zu Epic Records und mit dem Album und der gleichnamigen ausgekoppelten Single "Sunshine Superman" wurde er zum Popstar. Auf der B-Side der Single befand sich der Song "The Trip". Die E-Gitarre beim Song "Sunshine Superman" spielt der spätere Led Zeppelin-Gitarrist Jimmy Page. Von 1965 bis 1973 war Donovan mit fast allen seinen Singles in Großbritannien, USA und Australien in den Popcharts vertreten, die Erfolgreichsten neben "Catch The Wind" und "Sunshine Superman" waren "Colours" und "The Universal Soldier" 1965, "Mellow Yellow" 1966, "There Is A Mountain" 1967 sowie "Jennifer Juniper", "Hurdy Gurdy Man" und "Atlantis" 1968. No, no, no, ich war eigentlich nie Donovan-Fan, doch einige Sachen von ihm mag ich sehr gerne, zum Beispiel den Song "Atlantis", mit seinem fast 2 Minuten langen gesprochenen Intro: The continent of Atlantis was an island / Which lay before the great flood / In the area we now call the Atlantic Ocean / So great an area of land that from her western shores / Those beautiful sailors journeyed to the south / And the North Americas with ease / In their ships with painted sails / To them East Africa was a neighbor / Across a short strait of sea miles / The great Egyptian age is but a remnant of the Atlantian culture / The antediluvian kings colonized the world / All the Gods who play in the mythological dramas / In all legends from all lands were from far Atlantis ... undsoweiter undsofort ... hm, yeah, der Text ist ziemlicher Quatsch, aber atmosphärisch gut, haha, und dann gehts so richtig los: Way down below the ocean where I wanna be, she may be / Way down below the ocean where I wanna be, she may be / Way down below the ocean where I wanna be, she may be ... immer und immer wieder, super, der Song dauert zirka 5 hörenswerte Minuten. Auch gut finde ich das 69er Album "Barabajagal", die psychedelische Hochphase von Donovan mit Musikern wie Jeff Beck (Guitar), Ron Wood (Guitar), John Paul Jones (Bass), Aynsley Dunbar (Drums), Nicky Hopkins (Keyboards) und Rod Stewart (Backing Vocals), wow, und die 73er Single "Maria Magenta / The Intergalactic Laxative" finde ich auch super, speziell die B-Side: Oh, the intergalactic laxative, / Will get you from here to there. / Relieve you and believe me, / Without a worry or care. / If shitting is your problem / When you're out there in the stars, / Oh, the intergalactic laxative / Will get you from here to Mars. Ist ein super Kindskopfsong mit lustiger Kindskopfmusik, yeah. Mitte der 70er Jahre ließ sein kommerzieller Erfolg nach, doch Donovan hörte nie auf. Im Jahr 1981 spielte er neben Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Sting, Bob Geldof, Phil Collins, Pete Townshend und Tom Robinson bei der Amnesty International Benefit-Show "The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball" in London. Im Jahr 1992 erschien dann das Donovan Tribute-Album "Island Of Circles" beim Label Nettwork. Ist gut, der Song "Barabajagal" wird darauf von der Band Chocolate Factory interpretiert. Yeah, 1996 erschien das Album "Sutras" von Donovan beim Label American Recordings, Produzent war kein geringerer als Rick Rubin. Das bisher letzte Album "Shadows Of Blue" von Donovan erschien 2013. Irgendwie ist Donovan auch mit der Foundation For Consciousness-Based Education And World Peace des Filmemachers David Lynch und der Maharishi University Of Managment, einer non-profit University in Fairfield, Iowa verbandelt. Jedenfalls startete 2007 in Schottland die Planung einer von Maharishi inspirierten Universität namens The Invincible Donovan University, in der Transzendentale Meditation Pflichtbestandteil ansonsten herkömmlicher Lehrpläne werden soll. Unterstützt wird das Projekt wiederum von David Lynch. Donovan lebt heute mit seiner Familie in County Cork, Irland. Der Song "Season Of The Witch" ist auf der 1995 bei Sony Music erschienenen CD "The Very Best Of Donovan" zu finden. Eine Best Of-Album von Donovan sollte man sich auf jeden Fall leisten, okay.
