The Gun Club wurde 1979 in Los Angeles, Kalifornien von Jeffrey Lee Pierce (Vocals, Guitar) gegründet. Jeffrey Lee Pierce war Obmann des Blondie-Fanclubs und spielte vor The Gun Club bereits in Bands wie The Red Lights, The E-Types, The Individuals, Phast Phreddie & Thee Precisions oder The Cyclones. Das erste Line-up des Gun Club bestand aus Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Kid Congo Powers alias Brian Tristan (Guitar), Don Snowden (Bass) und Brad Dunning (Drums). Bei der Gründung nannte sich die Band noch The Creeping Ritual, änderte aber den Namen bald in The Gun Club. Don Snowden und Brad Dunning verließen die Band 1980 bereits wieder und wurden von Rob Ritter (Bass) und Terry Graham (Drums) ersetzt. Als nächster verabschiedete sich Kid Congo Powers, der zur Band The Cramps wechselte, für ihn kam Ward Dotson (Guitar, Slide Guitar). Im Jahr 1981 unterschrieb die Band bei Ruby Records und das Debütalbum "Fire Of Love" erschien. Es verkaufte sich gut und die Band wechselte zu Animal Records, dem Label des Blondie-Gitarristen Chris Stein. Bei diesem Label erschienen die beiden Alben "Miami" 1982 und "The Las Vegas Story" 1984. Inzwischen war Kid Congo Powers wieder zur Band zurückgekehrt und den Bass hatte Patricia Morrison übernommen, die auch für die Backing Vocals zuständig war. Doch 1984 schien bereits das Ende des Gun Club zu kommen, Jeffrey Lee Pierce versuchte eine Solokarriere und Kid Congo Powers und Patricia Morrison gründeten die Band Fur Bible. Naja, nix davon klappte so richtig und 1986 machten Jeffrey Lee Pierce und Kid Congo Powers mit Romi Mori (Bass) und Nick Sanderson (Drums) als The Gun Club weiter. Im Jahr 1987 erschien das vierte Album "Mother Juno" bei Red Rhino Records. Bis zum endgültigen Ende 1994 veröffentlichte der Gun Club noch die Alben "Pastoral Hide And Seek" 1990, "Divinity" 1991 und "Lucky Jim" 1993. Im Jahr 1992 verließ Kid Congo Powers die Band wieder und formierte seine eigene Band Congo Norvell. The Gun Club machte als Trio weiter und 1994 war dann für immer Schluss. Romi Mori und Nick Sanderson gründeten Ende der 90er Jahre die Band Freeheat. Jeffrey Lee Pierce starb 1996 im Alter von 37 Jahren. Jeffrey Lee Pierce war HIV positiv, hatte chronische Hepatitis und litt an einer Leberzirrhose. Mike Harvey von Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds sagte in einem Interview über Jeffrey Lee Pierce: I love a lot of his songs but he was pretty hard to connect with at first. I suppose he was pretty out of it with drink and drugs and so kind of difficult to communicate with. Most of the time it was difficult to work out what he was talking about. But he was always very nice and very gentlemanly. Ja, der Tod von Jeffrey Lee Pierce war und ist ein großer Verlust für die Popwelt. The Gun Club war eine tolle Band. Sex beat. Der Song "Sex Beat" ist auf dem Album "Fire Of Love" 1981 zu finden, das 2000 bei Last Call Records als CD neu aufgelegt wurde. Außerdem erschien er 1982 als B-Side der Single "Ghost On The Highway". Jeffrey Lee Pierce veröffentlichte 1985 die beiden Soloalben "Wildweed" und "Flamingo". Im Jahr 1992 erschien beim Label What's So Funny About das Album "Ramblin' Jeffrey Lee & Cypress Grove with Willie Love" und nach seinem Tod bei Bang! Records das Album "Six String Sermon" mit Aufnahmen aus den Jahren 1980 und 1981.
