Johnny Thunders wurde 1952 als John Genzale in New York geboren und begann seine musikalische Laufbahn 1967 mit der Band The Reign, danach kamen Johnny & The Jaywalkers, da nannte er sich aber noch nicht Johnny Thunders sondern Johnny Volume. Im Jahr 1970 gründete er dann mit Arthur Kane (Bass) und Rick Rivets (Guitar) die Band Actress. Rick Rivets stieg bald wieder aus und es kamen so nach und nach David Johansen (Vocals, Harmonica), Sylvain Sylvain alias Sylvain Mizrahi (Piano, Guitar, Vocals) und Billy Murcia (Drums) dazu und 1971 nannte man sich in New York Dolls um. Mit den New York Dolls nahm Johnny Thunders die beiden Alben "New York Dolls" 1973 und "Too Much Too Soon" 1974 für Mercury Records auf. Bei diesen Aufnahmen sass aber bereits Jerry Nolan hinter den Drums, Billy Murcia starb 1972 im Alter von 21 Jahren an einer Überdosis Heroin. Im Jahr 1975 verließen Johnny Thunders und Jerry Nolan die New York Dolls und gründeten mit dem Ex-Television Musiker Richard Hell (Bass) die Band The Heartbreakers. Die New York Dolls hielten noch bis 1976 durch, dann lösten sie sich endgültig auf. Johnny Thunders und Jerry Nolan wurden durch die Musiker Blackie Lawless (Guitar), Chris Robison (Keyboards) und Tony Machine (Drums) ersetzt. Von den Heartbreakers erschien 1977 das Album "L.A.M.F." bei Track Records. L.A.M.F. steht für Like A Mother Fucker. Die Heartbreakers bei diesem Album sind Johnny Thunders (Vocals, Guitar), Walter Lure (Vocals, Guitar), Billy Rath (Bass) und Jerry Nolan (Drums, Vocals), danach ging Johnny Thunders nach London, wo 1978 sein erstes Soloalbum "So Alone" bei Real Records erschien. Auf diesem Album sind auch Steve Jones (Guitar) und Paul Cook (Drums) von den Sex Pistols zu hören, weiters Gäste wie Chrissie Hynde (Vocals), Phil Lynott (Bass, Vocals) oder Steve Marriott (Harmonica, Piano, Keyboards, Vocals). Wow! Johnny Thunders kehrte 1979 in die USA zurück, aber nicht nach New York sondern nach Detroit, wo er in der Band War Gang spielte, der auch der Ex-MC5-Gitarrist Wayne Kramer angehörte. Anfang der 80er Jahre tourte Johnny Thunders wieder mit den Heartbreakers, diesmal aber als Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers. Im Jahr 1983 erschienen dann gleich 2 Soloalben von ihm, "In Cold Blood" bei New Rose Records und "Diary Of A Lover" bei Jem Records. Nein, es waren 3 Alben, bei New Rose Records erschien 1983 auch noch das Album "Hurt Me", Johnny Thunders singt zur akustischem Gitarre, yeah, zum Beispiel "Eve Of Destruction" von Barry McGuire oder "It Ain’t Me Baby" von Bob Dylan. Mit Keith George Yon (Bass) und Tony St. Helene (Drums) gründete Johnny Thunders 1984 die Band Black Cats, mit der er das Album "Que Sera Sera" 1985 bei Jungle Records veröffentlichte. Bei Jungle Records erschien 1988 noch das Album "Copy Cats" von Johnny Thunders und Patti Palladin. Im Jahr 1990 tourte Johnny Thunders durch Großbritannien und Irland, auf dieser Tournee wurde er von der irischen Band The Golden Horde begleitet. Johnny Thunders starb 1991 im Alter von 39 Jahren in New Orleans an einer Überdosis. It was a tragic end, and I mean, he went out in a blaze of glory, ha ha ha, so I thought I might as well make it look real good, you know, out of respect, so I just told everybody that when Johnny died he was laying down on the floor with his guitar in his hands. I made that up. When he came out of the St. Peter's Guest House, rigor mortis had set in to such an extent that his body was in a U shape. When you're laying on the floor in a fetal position, doubled over - well, when the body bag came out, it was in a U. It was pretty awful. Der Song "London Boys" ist auf seinem ersten Soloalbum "So Alone" zu finden, es wurde 2005 bei Sire Records als CD wiederveröffentlich. Auf der CD sind 4 Bonustracks mit drauf, unter anderem "The Wizard", eine Coverversion von Marc Bolan. "London Boys" wurde in der Besetzung Johnny Thunders (Vocals, Guitar), Steve Jones (Guitar), Phil Lynott (Bass) und Paul Cook (Drums) aufgenommen.
