Bryan MacLean schreibt in den liner notes des Albums: The music that is presented in this collection was written decades ago, when I was in the band Love, and was written with that band in my mind, and had been intended to be performed by, and associated with the band, Love. I firmly believe that if things had been the other way around, by now, you probably would've already heard a great deal, if not all of what is assembled here. For one thing, I would've stuck around the band a lot longer, not feeling the frustration of having such a backlog of unpublished, and unperformed material, and the natural unfulfilled desire for recognition, or even vindication. Bryan MacLean wurde 1946 in Los Angeles, Kalifornien geboren. Sein Vater war Architekt und baute die Paläste von Hollywoodstars wie Liz Taylor oder Dean Martin, seine Mutter war Tänzerin und Bryan MacLeans erste Freundin war Liza Minelli. Wow. Im Alter von 3 Jahren begann er Piano zu lernen und mit 17 Banjo und Gitarre zu spielen. Im Jahr 1963 bekam Bryan MacLean ein Engagement als Gitarrist im Club The Troubadour in West Hollywood. Ein Jahr später lernte er Arthur Lee kennen und sie gründeten die Band The Grass Roots, die aus Arthur Lee (Vocals, Harmonica, Guitar, Keyboards, Drums), Johnny Echols (Guitar, Vocals), Bryan MacLean (Guitar, Vocals), Johnny Fleckenstein (Bass) und Don Conka (Drums) bestand. Bald mussten sie aber feststellen, dass es bereits eine Band mit diesem Namen gab und änderten ihren Namen in Love. Im Jahr 1966 unterschrieb Love einen Plattenvertrag bei Elektra Records und das gleichnamige Debütalbum erschien. Mit Love nahm Bryan MacLean noch die beiden Alben "Da Capo" 1966 und "Forever Changes" 1967 für Elektra Records auf, bevor er 1968 ausstieg und einen Solovertrag bei Elektra Records unterschrieb. Doch das Label war mit seinen Soloaufnahmen nicht einverstanden und löste den Vertrag bald darauf wieder auf. Danach unterschrieb Bryan MacLean bei Capitol Records, aber auch dort entstand keine Platte. Bryan MacLean sagte über diese Zeit: I was alone in a hotel room in New York and I had lost practically everything. It occurred to me that I was in a tail-spin so I thought 'well, why don't I pray?' So I did, and nothing happened for about two or three weeks. At the end of that time, I was sitting in a drug store on 3rd Avenue having a drink, and suddenly the drink turned to sand in my mouth. I left the bar and when I reached the pavement and the daylight I knew something had changed. From that point on my life has been totally different. I'm now writing worship music that's presented in an ethereal genre. Celtic, spacy, no guitars. I call it spooky Christian music, spooky worship music. If a person is a Satanist or a Buddhist or a Hindu, they will be able to listen to this music and not be put off by it because it's the universal longing to be in the spirit realm that's being expressed.
