Magazine war die Band, die Howard Devoto nach seinem Ausstieg bei den Buzzcocks gegründet hat. Howard Devoto gründete 1976 mit Pete Shelley die Punkband Buzzcocks, stieg aber nach der ersten EP "Spiral Scratch" 1977 wieder aus und gründete Magazine. Die Band bestand anfänglich aus Howard Devoto alias Howard Trafford (Vocals), John McGeoch (Guitar, Saxophone), Bob Dickinson (Keyboards), Barry Adamson (Bass) und Martin Jackson (Drums). Die Band unterschrieb einen Plattenvertrag bei Virgin Records und 1978 erschien das Debütalbum "Real Life", da hatte Bob Dickinson das Keyboard aber bereits an Dave Formula alias David Tomlinson weitergegeben. Mit der Single "Shot By Both Sides / My Mind Ain’t So Open" hatten Magazine einen Hit in Großbritannien. So wirklich erfolgreich wollte es aber leider nicht werden. Magazine veröffentlichten 3 weitere gute Alben bei Virgin Records, "Secondhand Delight" 1979, "The Correct Use Of Soap" 1980 und "Magic, Murder And The Weather" 1981, danach lösten sie sich auf. Das letzte Album wurde in der Besetzung Howard Devoto, Barry Adamson, Dave Formula, Ben Mandelson (Guitar, Violin) und John Doyle (Drums) aufgenommen. Howard Devoto veröffentlichte 1983 bei Virgin Records das Soloalbum "Jerky Versions Of The Dream", dann versuchte er es im Duo mit dem Multiinstrumentalisten Noko alias Norman Fisher-Jones unter dem Namen Luxuria. Das Duo veröffentlichte von 1987 bis 1990 mehrere 12“-Singles und die beiden Alben "Unanswerable Lust" 1988 und "Beast Box" 1990 bei Beggars Banquet Records. Anfang der 2000er Jahre taten sich Howard Devoto und Pete Shelley wieder zusammen und veröffentlichten 2001 beim Label Cooking Vinyl das Album "Buzzkunst". Im Jahr 2009 fanden sich dann Magazine in der Besetzung Howard Devoto, Barry Adamson, Dave Formula, John Doyle und Noko wieder zusammen. Barry Adamson blieb aber nicht lange und gab seinen Bass an Jon 'Stan' White weiter. In dieser Besetzung veröffentlichten Magazine 2011 das Album "No Thyself" beim Label Wire-Sound. Das Album wurde von der Kritik sehr gut angenommen: The surprise excellence of the songs and the music makes this the long-overdue fourth great Magazine album. Thirty years ago, Howard Devoto sang of wanting to burn again. And here he is, doing exactly that. Seither hat die Band bei Wire-Sound noch die beiden EPs "Once At The Academy" 2016 und "Old World Charm" 2017 veröffentlicht, Barry Adamson ist auch wieder zu Magazine zurückgekehrt. Der Song "Shot By Both Sides" befindet sich auf dem Album "Real Life", das 2007 bei Virgin Records als CD wiederveröffentlicht wurde. In meiner Sammlung befindet sich auch noch das Album "Secondhand Daylight", das ebenfalls 2007 bei Virgin Records wiederveröffentlicht wurde.
