Nochmals No Wave aus New York. Die Band Mars war von 1975 bis 1978 aktiv und bestand aus Sumner Crane (Guitar, Vocals), Mark Cunningham (Bass, Vocals), China Burg (Guitar, Vocals) und Nancy Arlen (Drums). Mars creates interesting music out of apparent chaos; the vocals are babbled and the guitars, bass and drums sound like they're weaving in and out of the song while going in several different directions at once, yet the band is oddly compelling in its crazed, cacophonous way. Von Mars erschien während der Zeit ihres Bestehens nur die Single "3 E / 11.000 Volts" bei Rebel Records und die 4 Songs "Helen Fordsdale", "Hairwaves", "Tunnel" und "Puerto Rican Ghost" auf dem Sampler "No New York". Im Jahr 1980 wurde dann die EP "Mars" mit den Songs "N.N. End", "Scorn", "Outside Africa", "Monopoly" und "The Immediate Stages Of The Erotic" bei Infidelity Records nachgereicht. Sehr empfehlenswert ist auch die 2008 bei No More Records erschienene CD "The Complete Studio Recordings NYC 1977-1978", darauf sind alle diese Songs versammelt. Toll. China Burg alias Lucy Hamilton gründete danach mit Sumner Crane, Mark Cunningham und Ikue Mori (Drums) die Band John Gavanti, von der 1980 bei Atavistic Records das Album "John Gavanti" erschien. Im Jahr 1985 erschien bei Widowspeak Productions das Album "The Drowning Of Lucy Hamilton", eine Zusammenarbeit von Lucy Hamilton mit Lydia Lunch. Yeah! Dann gabs noch die Band Don King mit Donald Lindsay a.k.a. Don King, Lucy Hamilton, Mark Cunninham und Tony Maimone von Pere Ubu. Mark Cunningham war außerdem noch mit den Bands Raeo, Bel Canto Orchestra, Bèstia Ferida und Blood Quartet in der Popwelt unterwegs und veröffentlichte 1997 beim Label Por Caridad Producciones das Soloalbum "Blood River Dusk". Nancy Arlen trommelte nach ihrer Zeit mit Mars kurz in der Band Dark Day. Sie ist auf der Single "Hands In The Dark / Invisible Man" 1979 bei Strike It From The Records zu hören. Dark Day waren zu dieser Zeit Robin Crutchfield (Vocals, Piano), Nina Canal (Guitar) und Nancy Arlen (Drums). Nancy Arlen starb 2006 im Alter von 64 Jahren nach einer Herzoperation und Sumner Crane 2003 an einem Lymphom. Andere Bands bzw. Musiker*innen aus dem NY No Wave-Umfeld waren Lizzy Mercier Descloux, die auch unter dem Pseudonym Rosa Yemen aktiv war, Suicide, Arto/Neto, Liquid Liquid, The Bloods, Dinosaur L, Theoretical Girls, Bush Tetras, Pulsallama, The Static, The Del.Byzanteens, UT, Y Pants, Snatch, Boris Policeband, Ike Yard etcetera etcetera. Mara Missangas schrieb 2003 über No Wave: In the late seventies the No Wave bands created their own apocalyptic soundtrack of New York, self critical, riddled with arrogant doubts, these 'brats' were their own worst ennemies as well as their own best friends. Self-destructing and parodic chaos was the name of the game, playing the wrong note at the right time. Brian Eno, der Produzent des No New York-Samplers sagte: I notice that many of the more signifiquant contributions to rock music and to a lesser extent, avant garde music, have been made by enthusiastic amateurs and dabblers. Their strength is that they are able to approach the task of music-making without previously acquired solutions and without too firm a concept of what is and what is not possible. Ja, es war eine Menge toller Musik, die damals aus New York in unsere Ohren drang. Habe gerade das Buch "Sozialdemokratie: Letzter Aufruf!" von Oliver Scheibner gelesen, es ist 2019 bei bahoe books erschienen und sollte ebenfalls unsere Ohren finden. Oliver Scheibner: Meine politische Grundhaltung war immer jene, dass Politik die Ungleichheiten, die durch die Geburt in ein armes oder reiches Land, in eine vermögende oder nicht vermögende, eine gebildete oder nicht gebildete Familie entstehen, auszugleichen hat. Und dass sie genau so die Ungleichheiten, die im Laufe des Lebens durch Unglücksfälle und Krankheiten entstehen, ausgleichen soll. Pop heißt auch, dieses Buch zu lesen, yeah, und nicht nur dieses.
