Die Musik von 10cc könnte man großspurig als Art Rock bezeichnen oder abfällig als schöngeistigen Soft Rock mit Progansätzen, egal, jedenfalls trägt die Musik von 10cc zumeist viel Ironie in ihrem Herzen. 10cc wurde 1972 von Lol Creme (Guitar, Keyboards, Vocals), Eric Stewart (Guitar, Keyboards, Vocals), Graham Gouldman (Bass, Vocals) und Kevin Godley (Drums, Vocals) in Stockport, England gegründet. Alle 4 waren bereits seit Mitte der 60er Jahre als Songwriter und Musiker unterwegs. Lol Creme mit den Bands The Whirlwinds, Doctor Father, Yellow Bellow Room Boom und den Hotlegs, Eric Stewart mit The Mindbenders, Doctor Father, The New Wave Band und den Hotlegs, Graham Gouldman mit The Whirlwinds, The Mockingbirds, Frabjoy & Runcible Spoon und den Mindbenders und Kevin Godley mit The Mockingbirds, Yellow Bellow Room Boom, Frabjoy & Runcible Spoon, The New Wave Band und den Hotlegs. Wie man sieht, hatten sich die Wege der 4 Musiker bereits des öfteren gekreuzt, bevor sie 1972 gemeinsam 10cc gründeten. Die Band unterschrieb bei UK Records und 1973 erschien das Debütalbum "10cc". Mit den Songs "Donna", "Rubber Bullets" und "The Dean And I" gelangen 10cc auf Anhieb 3 Hits. Bei UK Records erschien 1974 noch das Album "Sheet Music" und der Hit "The Wall Street Shuffle", dann wechselten 10cc zu Mercury Records, wo die 4 erfolgreichsten Alben der Band erschienen, "The Original Soundtrack" 1975, "How Dare You!" 1976, "Deceptive Bends" 1977 und "Bloody Tourists" 1978. Die Hits dieser Zeitspanne waren "I’m Not In Love" 1975, "The Things We Do For Love" 1976 und "Dreadlock Holiday" 1978. Nach dem Album "How Dare You!" verließen Kevin Godley und Lol Creme 10cc und machten als Godley & Creme weiter. Eric Stewart: I was sorry to see them go. But we certainly did fall out at the time. I thought they were crazy. They were just walking away from something so big and successful. We'd had great success around the world and I thought we were just breaking in a very, very big way. The collective dynamite of those four people, four people who could all write, who could all sing a hit song. In one band. Eric Stewart und Graham Gouldman machten bis 1983 als 10cc weiter. Es erschienen noch die Alben "Look Hear?" 1980, "Ten Out Of 10" 1981 und "Windows In The Jungle" 1983, die sich nicht mehr ganz so gut verkauften, aber durchaus ihr Geld einspielten. Von 1984 bis 1991 musste sich die Popwelt ganz ohne 10cc weiterdrehen, aber 1992 kehrten sie mit dem bei Polydor Records erschienenen Album "...Meanwhile" in der Originalbesetzung zurück. Das Album floppte und Godley & Creme sagten der Band wieder Ade. Gouldman & Stewart veröffentlichten noch das Album "Mirror Mirror" unter dem Namen 10cc. Als Gastmusiker ist bei den Songs "Yvonne’s The One" und "Code Of Silence" Paul McCartney mit dabei, was aber das Albums auch nicht retten konnte. 10cc lösten sich wieder auf. Naja, seit 1999 tourt Graham Gouldman mit den Musikern Rick Fenn (Guitar, Vocals), Mike Stevens (Keyboards, Vocals), Mick Wilson (Percussion, Vocals) und Paul Burgess (Drums) wieder als 10cc. Was solls. So wirklich zu meinen großen Lieblingen haben 10cc zwar nie gehört, trotzdem habe ich mir das Album "Deceptive Bends" 1977 und die 2002 beim Label Universal Records erschienene Compilation "The Definitive Collection" für meine Sammlung gekauft. Ja, und die Godley&Creme-Single "Wedding Bells / Babies" 1981 findet sich auch darin. Wie sagte der englische Schriftsteller D.H. Lawrence so klug: Vertraut nie dem Künstler, vertraut der Geschichte. Yeah!
