Gary Gilmore wurde 1977 im Alter von 36 Jahren in Texas, USA wegen Mord hingerichtet. Der Song erschien 1977 bei Anchor Records als Single mit "Bored Teenagers" als B-Side. Davor hatten die Adverts bereits die Single "One Chord Wonders / Quickstep" 1977 bei Stiff Records veröffentlicht. The Adverts wurde 1976 von Gaye Advert alias Gaye Black (Bass, Vocals) und T.V. Smith alias Tim Smith (Vocals) in London, England gegründet. Mit dabei waren noch Howard Pickup alias Howard Boak (Guitar, Vocals) und Laurie Driver alias Laurie Muscat (Drums). Im Jahr 1977 erschien noch die Single "Safety In Numbers / We Who Wait" bei Anchor Records und 1978 bei Bright Records das Debütalbum "Crossing The Red Sea With The Adverts". Mit den Songs "Gary Gilmore’s Eyes" 1977 und "No Time To Be 21" 1978 hatte die Band 2 Hits in Großbritannien. Im Jahr 1979 erschien das zweite Album "Cast Of Thousands" bei CBS Records, als fünftes Bandmitglied war nun Tim Cross (Keyboards) mit dabei, ja, und bald darauf lösten sich die Adverts auf. T.V. Smith gründete die Band T.V. Smith’s Explorers, mit denen er 1981 das Album "The Last Words Of The Great Explorer" beim Label Kaleidoscope Sound veröffentlichte. Sein erstes Soloalbum, "Channel Five", erschien 1983 bei Expulsion Records und zuletzt erschien "Land Of The Overdose" 2018 beim Label JKP (Jochens Kleine Plattenfirma). Gaye Advert sagte nach ihrer kurzen Karriere mit den Adverts dem Pop good bye und nahm eine Karriere auf as a manager in social services. Im Jahr 1987 erschien dann noch bei Strange Fruit Records die EP "The Peel Sessions" mit den Songs "Quickstep", "Gary Gilmore’s Eyes", "One Chord Wonders", "New Boys" und "Bored Teenagers", die 1977 für die BBC eingespielt wurden. Der Song "Gary Gilmore’s Eyes" ist auf der 1998 bei Anagram Records erschienenen CompilationCD "The Best Of The Adverts" zu finden. Yeah! So, nun ein kurzer Auszug aus einem Interview mit Gay Advert aus dem Jahr 2001. Q: How important was fashion in punk for women to express themselves? A: I think the clothes that most female punks wore, were not worn in a sexual way, more rebelliously. People did think clothes should make a statement. I've never been into fashion particularly, and probably spent less on clothes than anyone else in Britain, but it was good fun wearing yards of toilet chain as bracelets! Q: Do you think punk changed things for women at all? A: It certainly spawned a lot more women in bands, and maybe that wouldn't have happened otherwise. Okay. Natürlich erst, nachdem ich sie aufmerksam gelesen habe, haha. Sie sind beide 2019 erschienen, ersteres bei Rowohlt und zweiteres bei Kunstmann.
