New Wave, yeah, oder Power Pop, der Sound klingt dünn, aber mit fettem Sound würde "Paranoia" auch nicht funktionieren, also die Petticoats haben bei diesem Song alles toll gemacht. The Petticoats war Stef Petticoat alias Stefanie Heinrich (Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Drums), also eine One-Woman-Band. Stef Petticoat wurde in Deutschland geboren und begann ihre musikalische Laufbahn 1977 als Sängerin in verschiedenen Rock- und Punkbands. Im Jahr 1978 zog sie nach London und gründete mit Zuni (Drums) die Band Necessary Evil, mit dabei waren noch Trish (Bass) und Fran (Guitar). Die Band löste sich aber bald wieder auf. Ihr nächstes Projekt war dann The Petticoats, unter diesem Namen veröffentlichte Stef Petticoat 1980 beim eigenen Label Bla-Bla-Bla Records die Single "Normal / Allergy / I’m Free". Drei weitere Songs von The Petticoats erschienen auf der EP "Scaling Triangles" beim Label Eustone Music, "Paranoia", "Dreams" und "Life - No". Die anderen Songs auf dieser EP stammen von den Bands Sole Sister und Sub Verse. Bei Zickzack Records erschien dann 1981 noch die Single "Darling, Let’s Have Another Baby / Schöner fremder Mann" unter dem Namen Petticoat / Crash. Crash ist Robert Crash, der damals auch mit Bands wie den Maniacs, Psychotik Tanks oder Volkstanz in der Popwelt unterwegs war. Mit Sue (Bass) und Angie (Drums) gründete Stef Petticoat 1981 die Band Amy & The Angels, die den Song "I Hate Being In Love" für die 1981 bei Girlfriend Records erschienene Compilation "Making Waves - A Collection Of 12 Womens Bands From The UK" beisteuerten. Die anderen 11 Womens Bands sind die Gymslips, Mistakes, Androids Of Mu, Guest Stars, Real Insects, Rock Goddess, Belles, Ministry Of Marriage, Tango Twins, Nancy Boys und Sisterhood Of Spit. So, noch ein Auszug aus einem Interview, das Layla Gibbon mit Stef Petticoat 2009 für Maximum Rock’n’Roll führte: Stef: I don't really know how I did this. I just did it. I loved the punk energy and the loud, aggressive music. I did not see why women/lesbians always had to be acoustic, quiet, full of harmony etc. The world was hostile to me - I had problems at work being a psychologist in a psychiatric hospital, "not fitting in" because I was living in a commune and was not married to a doctor. I did not agree with all the doctors' psychiatric ideas, so I was loud back. Not all male straight punks were drunken idiots, there were many very nice, polite men like the ones in Rock Against Sexism. Layla: What about your involvement in Rock Against Sexism - what was that like and why did it end? What did those women do afterwards? Stef: During all of this time I was also involved in Rock Against Sexism, an organization that promoted women in music. We had a fanzine and also organized a lot of gigs with all-female-bands (The Raincoats, Au Pairs, Delta 5, The Gymslips etc.). Rock Against Sexism was only about ten or fifteen people living in London, so it was a lot of work for everyone. I honestly do not remember why Rock Against Sexism ended. Probably because all the people involved were too busy with other things. Zuni later formed Spies of Saturn with her then-girlfriend - later they both became sound engineers. Anti-Sexist-Noise, yeah.
