Experimental Punk, yeah. The Raincoats wurden 1977 von Ana da Silva (Vocals, Keyboards, Guitar) und Gina Birch (Vocals, Bass) in London, England gegründet. Beide studierten am Hornsey College of Art in London. Nach einigen Umbesetzungen bestand die Band schließlich aus Ana da Silvia, Gina Birch, Vicky Aspinall (Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Violin) und Palmolive alias Paloma Romero (Drums). Die Band unterzeichnete bei Rough Trade Records und 1979 erschien das Debütalbum "The Raincoats". Kurt Cobain: I don’t really know anything about The Raincoats except that they recorded some music that has affected me so much that, whenever I hear it I'm reminded of a particular time in my life when I was (shall we say) extremely unhappy, lonely, and bored. If it weren't for the luxury of putting that scratchy copy of The Raincoats' first record, I would have had very few moments of peace. I suppose I could have researched a bit of history about the band but I feel it's more important to delineated the way I feel and how they sound. When I listen to The Raincoats I feel as if I'm a stowaway in an attic, violating and in the dark. Rather than listening to them I feel like I'm listening in on them. We're together in the same old house and I have to be completely still or they will hear me spying from above and, if I get caught - everything will be ruined because it's their thing. Das Album "The Raincoats" erreichte Platz 5 in den britischen Indie-Charts. Bei Rough Trade Records erschienen dann noch die beiden Alben "Odyshape" 1981 und "Moving" 1984 sowie die EP "Animal Rhapsody". Bei Reachout International Records erschien 1983 das Livealbum "The Kitchen Tapes". Drummerin Palmolive hatte die Raincoats nach dem ersten Album wieder verlassen und bei "Odyshape" sitzen Gäste wie Robert Wyatt, Richard Dudanski, Charles Hayward und Ingrid Weiss hinterm Schlagzeug. Kim Gordon: I loved the Slits because of their boldness and that they actually had commercial songs, but it was The Raincoats I related to most. They seemed like ordinary people playing extraordinary music. They had enough confidence to be vulnerable and to be themselves without having to take on the mantle of male rock/punk rock aggression... or the typical female as sex symbol avec irony or sensationalism. Im Jahr 1984 lösten sich die Raincoats vorerst auf, doch 1994 waren sie dann wieder da und 1996 erschien das vierte Album "Looking In The Shadows" bei Rough Trade Records. Die Band bestand nun nur mehr aus Ana da Silva und Gina Birch, die bei den Aufnahmen unterstützt wurden von Ed Buller (Piano, Moog Synthesizer), Anne Wood (Guitar, Bass, Violin) und Heather Dunn (Bass, Drums). Seither ist von den Raincoats leider kein Tonträger mehr erschienen und ihr letztes Konzert liegt auch schon einige Jahre zurück, aber irgendwie gibt es sie noch - hoffe ich zumindest. Der Song "Red Shoes" ist auf dem Album "Odyshape" zu finden, das 1993 bei Rough Trade als CD wiederveröffentlicht wurde. Ana da Silva hat 2004 bei Chicks On Speed Records das Soloalbum "The Lighthouse" veröffentlicht und 2018 beim Label Newhere Music gemeinsam mit Phew alias Hiromi Moritani das Album "Island". Gina Birch war in der zweiten Hälfte der 80er Jahre im Duo mit Vicky Aspinall unter dem Namen Dorothy in der Popwelt unterwegs, spielte zwischendurch mal bei Red Krayola mit und veröffentlichte 1998 mit der Band The Hangovers bei Kill Rock Stars Records das Album "Slow Dirty Tears". The Hangovers waren Gina Birch, Ida Akesson (Sampler, Keyboards), Phil Legg (Keyboards), Simon Fisher Turner (Guitar, Keyboards, Noises), John Frenett (Bass) und Joy Dilworth (Drums). Yeah! Ich hab von den Raincoats die Alben "The Raincoats", "Odyshape" und "The Kitchen Tapes" in meine Sammlung aufgenommen. I love The Raincoats! Hört euch auch den tollen Song "Freaking Out" 1977 von der Band Question Mark bei youtube an. Question Mark war eine Psychedelic-Funk-Band aus Nigeria und hat 1977 bei EMI Records das Album "Be Nice To The People" veröffentlicht.
