Die Band 10.000 Maniacs wurde 1981 in Jamestown, New York von Teri Newhouse (Vocals), Dennis Drew (Keyboards), Robert Buck (Guitar), Steven Gustafson (Bass) und Chet Cardinale (Drums) gegründet. Bis zum ersten Album "Secrets Of The I Ching" 1983 bei Mark Records gabs aber noch einige Umbesetzungen. Im Jahr 1983 waren die 10.000 Maniacs dann Dennis Drew, Robert Buck, Steven Gustafson, Natalie Merchant (Vocals), John Lombardo (Guitar, Bass) und Jerome Augustyniak (Drums). Die 10.000 Maniacs gibt es noch immer, obwohl sie sich sehr unauffällig durch die Popwelt bewegen. Sie hatten mit den Songs "What’s The Matter Here?" 1988, "Trouble Me" 1989, "These Are Days" und "Candy Everybody Wants" 1992 sowie "Because The Night" 1993 Erfolg in den US-Indie-Charts und hatten 2 MTV Unplugged Auftritte, 1989 und 1993. Wow. Irgendwie halten Dennis Drew, Steve Gustafson und Jerome Augustyniak die 10.000 Maniacs am Laufen. Robert Buck starb 2000 im Alter von 42 Jahren an Leberproblemen. Sängerin Natalie Merchant verließ die Band 1993 und startete mit dem Album "Tigerlily" 1995 ihre Solokarriere. Neue Sängerin bei den 10.000 Maniacs wurde Mary Ramsey, die auch Violine und Viola spielt. John Lombardo verließ die Band offiziell 2002, ist aber auch bei den späteren Alben immer wieder als Gastmusiker mit dabei. Im Jahr 2015 erschien das bisher letzte Album "Twice Told Tales" bei Cleopatra Records. Die Band besteht aktuell aus Mary Ramsey, Dennis Drew, Steven Gustafson, Jerome Augustyniak, Jeff Erickson (Guitar, Vocals) und Duane Calhoun (Guitar, Vocals). Die Musik von den 10.000 Maniacs könnte man als College Pop bezeichnen, hmm, irgendwie meist eher soft und folkig, aber nicht langweilig, zumindest nicht schlecht langweilig. Der Song "Like The Weather" erschien 1987 bei Elektra Records als Single, auf der B-Side befindet sich der Song "A Campfire Song". Beide Songs sind auch auf dem 87er Album "In My Tribe" zu finden, das 1997 bei Elektra Records als CD neu aufgelegt wurde. Ich habe von den 10.000 Maniacs die 2004 bei Rhino Records erschienene Compilation "Campfire Songs" in meiner Sammlung, CD1 trägt den Untertitel "The Most Popular Recordings" und CD2 nennt sich "The Obscure And Unknown Recordings". Yeah! Diese Compilation ist echt hörenswert, "Like The Weather" befindet sich auf CD1 und auf CD2 gibts u.a. eine Version von David Bowies "Starman".
