Lo-Fi Noise Pop, yeah. Beat Happening wurde 1982 von Calvin Johnson (Guitar, Vocals), Heather Lewis (Drums, Guitar, Vocals) und Bret Lunsford (Guitar, Drums, Vocals) in Olympia, Washington gegründet. Calvin Johnson gründete 1982 auch das Label K Records. Die erste Veröffentlichung des Labels war 1982 die Kassette "Survival Of The Coolest" von der Band Supreme Cool Beings, die aus Heather Lewis, Gary Allen May (Bass, Guitar) und Doug Monaghan (Saxophone) bestand. Im Jahr 1984 gabs dann die ersten Tonträger von Beat Happening bei K Records und zwar die Kassetten "Beat Happening" und "Three Tea Breakfast" sowie die Single "Our Secret / What’s Important". They make a lot of rules / They tell a lot of lies / If we don't wanna, we won't behave / And they can't make us, 'cause we can't be made / We're baaad, bad seeds / Bad, baaad, bad bad seeds / We're baaad, bad seeds / Bad, baaad, bad bad seeds. Im Jahr 1985 erschien das Debütalbum "Beat Happening", auf dem auch der Song "Bad Seeds" zu finden ist. Calvin Johnson gründete 1987 mit Steve Peters und Tobi Vail die Band The Go Team, die in den 80er Jahren mehrere Kassetten und Singles bei K Records veröffentlichten. Tobi Vail: The Go Team was about process. Sometimes we'd deliberately leave stuff out to incite participation in the listener. "Donna Parker Pop", our first K release, featured all instrumentals but included the statement 'Make up your own words and sing along' - and people did. We recorded with some of those people later. On the one hand we were trying to demystify music and encourage people to play songs in public - if they wanted to. On the other hand, we actually liked what we sounded like, and we hated most of the pro-sounding jam bands/shredding metal-punk bands that played parties in Olympia. We embraced chaos and rejected mastery. "Jamboree", das zweite Album von Beat Happening erschien 1988 bei K Records, den Europavertrieb für K Records übernahm Rough Trade. Auch beim nächsten Album "Black Candy" 1989 war Rough Trade für den Europavertrieb zuständig, dann wurde er von Sub Pop übernommen. Von Beat Happening sind seither noch die beiden Alben "Dreamy" 1991 und "You Turn Me On" 1992 erschienen. Die Band hat sich aber nicht aufgelöst. Calvin Johnson war in den 90er Jahren mit den Bands Dub Narcotic Sound System, The Dead Presidents und The Halo Benders in der Popwelt unterwegs, außerdem veröffentlichte er 3 Soloalben bei K Records, zuletzt "A Wonderful Beast" 2018. Heather Lewis war 1994 Gastsängerin beim Album "Watusi" von The Wedding Present, sie singt bei den Songs "Click Click" und "Swimming Pools, Movie Stars", außerdem singt sie auf 3 Alben von Land Of The Loops alias Alan Sutherland, "Percival" 1994, "Bundle Of Joy" 1996 und "Puttering About A Small Land" 2000. Bret Lunsford gründete Ende der 80er Jahre mit Karl Blau (Bass, Guitar, Organ, Saxophone, Drums, Vocals) und Phil Elvrum (Drums, Bass, Guitar, Organ, Vocals) die Band D+ und das Label Knw-Yr-Own, auf dem von D+ zuletzt 2018 das Album "Destroy Before Listening" erschien. Im Jahr 2000 gabs dann bei K Records eine neue Single von Beat Happening, "Angel Gone / Zombie Limbo Time" und 2003 die Compilation "Music To Climb The Apple Tree By", eine Sammlung of recordings from 1984 to 2000 released on singles and other compilations. Bei Domino Records erschien 2019 das 6-Vinyl-Alben umfassende Box-Set "We Are Beat Happening". Wow! Hoffentlich gibts irgendwann auch wieder Neues von Beat Happening, ist nämlich eine tolle Band.
