Funk, yeah. Bootsy Collins wurde 1951 als William Earl Collins in Cincinnati, Ohio geboren. Mit seinem älteren Bruder Phelps 'Catfish' Collins gründete er 1968 die Funkband The Pacemakers. Die Band bestand aus Philippé Wynne (Vocals), Phelps 'Catfish' Collins (Guitar), Bootsy Collins (Bass) und Will Jackson (Drums). Im Jahr 1970 wurden Bootsy und Phelps 'Catfish' Collins von James Brown für seine Begleitband The J.B.’s angeheuert. Sie sind bei den James-Brown-Hits "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine", "Super Bad" und "Talkin' Loud And Sayin' Nothing" mit dabei. Die Brüder verließen James Brown aber bereits 1971 wieder und gründeten die Band Houseguests, zu der noch die Musiker Frankie 'Kash' Waddy (Drums), Clayton 'Chicken' Gunnells (Trumpet) und Robert 'Chopper' McCullough (Saxophone) gehörten. Die Houseguests veröffentlichten 1971 die beiden Singles "What So Never The Dance Part 1 & 2" und "My Mind Set Me Free Part 1 & 2". Danach holte George Clinton die Collins-Brüder in seine Band Funkadelic. Auf dem 1972 bei Westbound Records erschienenen Funkedelic-Album "America Eats Its Young" sind die beiden zum ersten Mal mit dabei. Bootsy Collins spielte seinen Bass auch bei Parliament, der zweiten Band von Georg Clinton. Auch die 1976 gegründete Bootsy’s Rubber Band, war Teil von George Clintons P-Funk Imperium. Neben Funkadelic, Parliament und Bootsy’s Rubber Band gehörten noch Bands wie die P-Funk All Stars, Parlet, The Brides Of Funkenstein, The Sweat Band oder The Horny Horns zum P-Funk Imperium. Das Debütalbum "Stretchin’ Out In Bootsy’s Rubber Band" von Bootsy's Rubber Band erschien 1976 bei Warner Bros. Records und 1978 schaffte es die Band mit dem Song "Bootzilla" auf Platz 1 der us-amerikanischen Rhythm’n’Blues-Charts. Bootsy Collins: Funk is the absence of any and everything you can think of, but the very essence of all that is. And saying that, I'm saying funk is anything that we create in our minds that we want to do, what we want to be, but we don't have the resources. Zuletzt erschien von Bootsy Collins 2020 beim Label Sweerwater Studios das Album "The Power Of The One". Sein Bruder Phelps 'Catfish' Collins starb 2010 im Alter von 66 Jahren. Mit Cory Danziger gründete Bootsy Collins 2010 die Online Funk University "Funk U", an online-only bass guitar school in which he also serves as curator and lead professor. Der Song "Party On Plastic (What’s Bootsy Doin’?)" ist auf der 2003 bei Epic Records erschienenen Compilation "6 Degrees Of P-Funk - The Best Of George Clinton And His Funky Family" zu finden.
