Outsider Pop mit Butch Willis & The Rocks, yeah. Butch Willis kommt aus Beltsville, Maryland und begann seine musikalische Laufbahn Anfang der 80er Jahre. Er gründete die Band Butch Willis & The Rocks und das Label Love Records, bei dem in den 80er Jahren die Single "The Gardens Outside / I’ll Never Be The Same Again" 1983 und die beiden Alben "Of" 1983 und "Forthcomings" 1986 erschienen. Hey, hey, we're The Rocks / You can look at us or you can stop / Hey, hey, we're The Rocks / We just wanna thank you, thank you, thank you a lot. The Rocks waren nicht wirklich eine Band, sondern mehrere Musiker, die dem manisch-depressiven Butch Willis (Vocals, Guitar) bei seinen Unternehmungen hilfreich zur Seite standen. Dazu gehörten Musiker wie Kent Schroeder (Guitar), Dean X alias Dean Evangelista (Guitar), Michael Maye (Bass), Cap'n Jon alias Jon Corlin (Bass), Jeff Lotson (Drums) oder Jeff Scott (Drums). Im Jahr 1990 erschien dann bei Teenbeat Records die EP "Shopping Bag" unter dem Namen Butch Willis ohne den Zusatz The Rocks, obwohl anzunehmen ist, dass manche der oben genannten Musiker auch bei dieser EP mitwirkten. Der Musiker Phil Milstein sagt über Butch Willis: In the mind of Butch Willis, he and his group The Rocks are the entry-level equivalent of Bob Seeger & The Silver Bullet Band, Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band or even the latter-day Rolling Stones. To the rest of the world, however, he and The Rocks belong much more to the realm of such outsider musical artists as The Twinkeyz, Electric Eels, Shuggie Rodelle & His Imbiblio Band or the singing flea market cowboy Buddy Max, than they do to the world of arena rock. Willis' songs are exciting, his lyrics entrancing, and his quavering voice and unsteady physical presence are like watching a hobbled old lady trying to cross a busy intersection against the light. Phil Milstein ist Präsident der Velvet Underground Appreciation Society und Betreiber der site "Probe is Turning-on the People!". Bei Teenbeat Records erschienen von Butch Willis & The Rocks noch die Compilation "Repeats" 1994, das Album "Conquering The Ice" 1995 und die EP "Speedballs" 1996. Dann war Schluss mit The Rocks und es kamen Butch Willis & D Flat, yeah, unter diesem Namen erschien 2000 das Album "Superstitious Mummys / Of 2" bei Teenbeat. D Flat waren die Musiker Karl Straub (Guitar), Mark Robinson (Guitar), Tom Krauth (Bass) und Chris Callahan (Drums). Teenbeat-Gründer Mark Robinson: Butch was probably one of the lowest selling, if not the lowest selling, Teenbeat act. But I was still like, 'Why aren't people buying this?' It's weird and not that accessible, but it's really good. (…) He advertises every time I see him that he's retired from the music business, he doesn't want to perform. He doesn't go out much anymore. Zum Song "The Girl’s On My Mind" sagte Butch Willis: I'm more interested in music than women. Okay, ich hoffe Butch Willis gehts soweit gut und er schenkt uns bald wieder tolle Popmusik. Der Song "The Girl's On My Mind" ist sowohl auf dem Album "Forthcomings" 1986 als auch auf der Compilation "Repeats" 1994 zu finden.
