Die Punkband Butthole Surfers wurde Ende der 70er Jahre von Gibby Haynes (Vocals, Saxophone) und Paul Leary (Guitar, Vocals) an der Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas gegründet. Die beiden machten damals auch das Zine "Strange V.D." zusammen. An Bass und Drums waren anfangs Scott Stevens und Scott Matthews mit dabei. Im Jahr 1983 erschien die EP "Butthole Surfers" bei Alternative Tentacles Records, danach unterschrieb die Band bei Touch And Go Records, wo 1984 das Debütalbum "Psychic... Powerless... Another Man’s Sac" erschien. Die Rhythmusgruppe bestand nun aus Bill Jolly (Bass), King Coffey (Drums) und Teresa Nervosa alias Teresa Taylor (Drums). Bei Touch And Go Records erschienen noch die Alben "Rembrandt Pussyhorse" 1986, "Locust Abortion Technician" 1987 und "Hairway To Steven" 1988, die es alle in die UK Indiecharts schafften, aber in den USA wenig Erfolg hatten. Der Song "The Hurdy Gurdy Man" wurde von Donovan alias Donovan Leitch geschrieben und von ihm 1968 bei Pye Records als Single veröffentlicht, auf der B-Side befand sich der Song "Teen Angel". Nach der EP "The Hurdy Gurdy Man" 1990 und dem Album "Piouhgd" 1991 bei Rough Trade Records unterschrieben die Butthole Surfers beim Majorlabel Capitol Records und ernteten eine Menge Kritik von den Fans. Paul Leary: I grew up listening to The Beatles and Grand Funk Railroad and Dean Martin, and the thought of being on the same record label that they were on was too fucking weird, really weird. A lot of people gave us grief for doing that, but fuck: I wasn't going to turn that down. Bei Capitol Records erschienen die beiden Alben "Independent Worm Saloon" 1993 und "Electriclarryland" 1996, mit dem Song "Pepper" hatten die Butthole Surfer 1996 auch den größten Hit ihrer langjährigen Karriere. Im Jahr 1998 nahmen die Butthole Surfers das Album "After The Astronaut" auf, doch Capitol Records veröffentlichte das Album nicht und feuerte die Band. Das nächste Album "Weird Revolution" erschien 2001 bei Hollywood Records, viele der Songs waren bereits für das Album "After The Austronaut" aufgenommen worden, wurden aber für "Weird Revolution" nochmals neu eingespielt. Die Band bestand nun aus Gibby Haynes, Paul Leary, Nathan Calhoun (Bass) und King Coffey. "Weird Revolution" blieb bisher das letzte Album der Butthole Surfer, obwohl die Band noch immer besteht. Paul Leary: We've all been busy with our own separate things, and I've done a lot of producing in the past few years, and I've got to the point now where I feel like I've done doing that for a while, so it's time to make a new Butthole Surfers album. Especially now that Trump is president, jeez! If there was ever a time for a Butthole Surfers album it's fucking now. It just doesn't get any weirder than that. Okay, warten wir ab. Der Song "The Hurdy Gurdy Man" ist auf der EP "The Hurdy Gurdy Man" 1990 und auf dem Album "Pioughd" 1991 zu finden, das Album wurde 2007 beim Label Latino Bugger Veil als CD wiederveröffentlicht, als Bonus ist die 1989 bei Touch And Go Records erschienene EP "Widowermaker!" mit drauf. Die Butthole Surfers führten von 1996 bis 1999 einen Prozess mit Touch And Go Records um die Herausgabe ihres Backkatalogs, den sie schließlich gewannen. Der Name Butthole Surfers war eigentlich nicht für die Band geplant, sondern war der Titel eines ihrer Songs, unter dem ein Veranstalter sie irrtümlich ankündigte. Der ursprüngliche Name lautete 100 Foot Worm Makes Own Food, unter diesem Namen erschien beim Label Stomach Ache Records die 7"-EP "Stargazers". Psychedelic Noise Punk, yeah.
