Die Band The Cleaners From Venus wurde 1980 von Martin Newell (Vocals, Keyboards, Guitar, Bass, Drum Machine, Electronics, Glockenspiel) und Lawrence 'Lol' Elliott (Drums) in Wivenhoe, England gegründet. Das Debütalbum "Blow Away Your Troubles" erschien 1981 beim eigenen Label Man At The Off Licence auf Kassette. In den 80er Jahren erschienen zahlreiche Kassetten der Cleaners From Venus bei Man At The Off Licence, aber auch die beiden LPs "Going To England" 1987 und "Town & Country" 1988 bei RCA Records. Außer Martin Newell und Lawrence Elliott wirkten über die Jahre noch Musiker wie Giles Smith (Keyboards, Backing Vocals), Nelson alias Peter Nice (Bass), Robbie Romp (Bass), John Parish (Drums), Pablo Cook (Percussion) oder Chris Bandy (Tape) bei den Cleaners From Venus mit, yeah, und viele viele mehr. Die treibende Kraft bei den Cleaners war der 1953 geborene Martin Newell, der seine musikalische Laufbahn 1973 als Sänger der Band Plod begann. Plod bekamen 1975 einen Vertrag bei Banjul Records, doch bevor ihr Debütalbum fertiggestellt war, ging das Label Pleite. Im Jahr 2010 erschien schließlich die EP "Neo City" bei Rave Up Records, mit 6 Songs aus den alten Aufnahmesessions. Oh, Johnny the Moondog is dead / Oh, I can't get it out of my head / And it said to me / One ghost will haunt me now / When I remember how / They kill the good guys off in history / And tomorrow, who will the unicorn be? Die nächste Band von Martin Newell hieß Gypp, mit dieser Band veröffentlichte er 1978 bei Shy Talk Records die EP "Yaah!". Im Jahr 1980 veröffentlichte Martin Newell dann unter seinem Namen bei Liberty Records die Single "Young Jobless / Sylvie In Toytown" und ging dann mit den beiden Bands The Cleaners From Venus und The Stray Trolleys sowie mit dem eigenen Label Man At The Off Licence an den Start. Of all the thorny crowns / They ever throw around / A pop messiah must wear the cruelest one / Not forever / Only until you are mad. Ende der 80er Jahre kam noch die dritte Band The Brotherhood Of Lizards dazu, mit der Martin Newell die beiden Alben "Brotherhood Of Lizards" 1988 und "Lizardland" 1989 veröffentlichte. Zwischendurch nahm Martin Newell auch noch mehrere Soloalben auf, das bisher letzte, "Wireless Wivenhoe" erschien 2018 bei Thyme & Matter Records. The Cleaners From Venus lösten sich Mitte der 90er Jahre auf, doch Anfang 2000 kehrten sie in die Popwelt zurück, zuletzt erschien von der Band 2021 das Album "Penny Novelettes" als Self-Release. Yeah, und die Band Gypp gab 1996 ein Reunionkonzert in Gütersloh, das 2000 unter dem Titel "Reunion Concert" beim Label Jarmusic als CD erschien. Also Martin Newell ist noch immer sehr aktiv. And if the world should end / I always tell my friend / 'In case of separation, think of me / Cause I love you and I will see you again.' / Oh, Johnny the Moondog is dead / Oh, the man on the radio said / He said Johnny... Der Song "Johnny The Moondog Is Dead" ist auf der 1993 bei Tangerine Records erschienen Compilation "Golden Cleaners" zu finden. Diese tolle Cleaners-Compilation, sollte eigentlich in keiner Popsammlung fehlen. So, zum Abschluss als Hörtipps noch ein paar alte Rhythm’n’Blues-Songs, die ich gerade entdeckt habe, "Mountain Oysters" 1949 von Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davies, "Kissin’ Boogie" 1952 von Beverly Wright und "My Baby Keeps Rollin’" 1953 von Annisteen Allen.
