Indie Pop aus Kanada, yeah. Destroyer wurde 1995 von Daniel Bejar (Vocals, Guitar, Synthesizer) in Vancouver, Kanada gegründet. Daniel Bejar: I kind of wanted to go for a rock 'n' roll name. In our own special way we're tearing shit apart, you just have to listen very carefully. Musically I knew it was never going to be a metal band, but I thought lyrically there were fangs to the music. Das Debütalbum "We'll Build Them A Golden Bridge" erschien 1996 bei Tinker Recordings, es wurde von Daniel Bejar zuhause im Alleingang eingespielt. Erst beim dritten Album "City Of Daughters", das 1998 bei Endearing Records erschien, wurde Destroyer zu einer Band. Die Besetzung bestand nun aus Daniel Bejar, John Collins (Bass, Synthesizer) und Scott Morgan (Drums, Saxophone, Clarinet). Bald darauf gehörten auch noch Stephen Wood (Guitar, E-Bow, Effects) und Jason Zumpano (Piano, Keyboards, Computer) zur Band. Das erste Album in dieser Besetzung war "Thief", es erschien 1999 beim Label Cave Canem. Der Song "The Bad Arts" ist auf dem 2001 bei Misra Records erschienenen Album "Streethawk - A Seduction" zu finden. Nach diesem Album unterschrieben Destroyer bei Merge Records, wo sie auch heute noch veröffentlichen, aber irgendwie fiel die Band auch auseinander und das erste Album bei Merge Records, "This Night" 2002, stellte eine völlig neue Band vor, bestehend aus Daniel Bejar, Nicolas Bragg (Guitar, Vocals, E-Bow, Trumpet, Organ, Cymbal, Piano), Chris Frey (Bass, Vocals, Melodica, E-Bow) und Fisher Rose (Drums, Vocals, Vibraphone, Percussion, Violin, Synthesizer, Piano, Cymbal). Es war noch immer Indie Pop, vielleicht etwas experimenteller und vielfältiger, leider hatte er meiner Meinung nach etwas an Charme eingebüßt. Bei Merge Records erschienen bisher noch 9 weitere Alben, zuletzt "Dan's Boogie" 2025. Die Band besteht aktuell aus Daniel Bejar, Nicolas Bragg, John Collins (Bass, Synthesizer, Programming), Ted Bois (Keyboards), David Carswell (Guitar, Keyboards), JP Carter (Trumpet) und Joshua Wells (Drums, Percussion, Keyboards). Daniel Bejar hat neben Destroyer noch mit den Bands The New Pornographers, Vancouver Nights, Swan Lake, Hello Blue Roses und A Merge Group Alben veröffentlicht, zuletzt mit Hello Blue Roses bei Jaz Records das Album "Wild Nights!" 2020. Daniel Bejar: I always start with the lyrics, because starting with the music means the words will be bad. Generally, if you could picture a bunch of rock and roll momentum behind a song and it was particularly melodious, maybe the Pornographers would do it. If it was kind of moody and more lyrical, then maybe it would be a Destroyer song. Anything that's really lyrically driven I would keep for Destroyer.
