Der Song "Sorry Entertainer" erschien 1983 auf der von Daniel Johnston selbst herausgegebenen Kassette "Yip/Jump Music". Diese Kassette wurde 1988 von Homestead Records als Vinyl-Doppelalbum neu aufgelegt. "Yip/Jump Music" wird von Kurt Cobain in seiner Liste der 50 besten Alben auf Platz 35 geführt. Kurt Cobains Liste ist in seinem Buch "Journals" nachzulesen, die deutsche Ausgabe heißt "Tagebücher 1988-1994" und ist 2002 bei Kiepenheuer & Witsch erschienen. Die ersten 5 Plätze in dieser Liste belegen die Alben "Raw Power" 1973 von Iggy & The Stooges, "Surfer Rosa" 1988 von den Pixies, "Pod" 1990 von den Breeders, "Dying For It" 1988 von den Vaselines und "Phylosophy Of The World" 1969 von den Shaggs. Ich habe "Yip/Jump Music" als Vinyl-Doppelalbum in meiner Popssammlung, yeah, besondere Freude bereiten mir auch die beiden bei Little Teddy Recordings erschienenen EPs "A Tribute To Daniel Johnston Vol.1" 1993 und "A Tribute To Daniel Johnston Vol.3" 1994. Auf Vol.1 werden die Daniel-Johnston-Songs "Honey I Sure Miss You", "Casper The Friendly Ghost", "Good Morning You" und "Cold Hard World" von den Bands TV Personalities, Bartlebees, Wimp Factor 14 und Hanshalf Trio interpretiert. Yeah! Auf Vol.3 befinden sich die Songs "King Kong", "I Am A Baby", "I Remember Painfully" und "Big Business Monkey" in der Versionen von Half Japanese, Kitchen Cynics, Bedlam Rovers und Maylove. Vol.2 habe ich leider nicht. Auf CD1 sind die Covers zu finden und auf CD2 die Originale von Daniel Johnston. Sollte eigentlich auch in keiner Popsammlung fehlen. "Sorry Entertainer" wird darauf von Calvin Johnston interpretiert. Ich habe mir den wunderschönen Kunstband "Daniel Johnston" gekauft, der 2009 beim Verlag Rizzoli erschienen ist, da sind eine Menge toller Zeichnungen von Daniel Johnston sowie ein Interview mit ihm drin. Weiters 3 Textbeträge über ihn von Jad Fair, Philippe Vergne und Harvey Pekar. Daniel Johnston: I agree, art needs to be publicized, you know, because not everybody's gonna go to the museum. Daniel Johnston hat sein eigenes Comic-Universum mit Figuren wie Jeremiah the Frog, Vile Corrupt, Kung-Fu Duck oder den Weirdies erschaffen. Auf einer Zeichnung ist auch ein Schwein zu sehen, ein Schwein mit 3 Augen und der Sprechblase: I’m worried. Ich habe eine Version dieses dreiäugigen Schweins für unser Glücksschweinmuseum gemalt. Daniel Johnston: Well, you know, I think they make a great big deal out of famous artists and painters. A lot of the comic book artists are better. They draw all the time. You know, famous painters might paint a painting and it can take a whole year for them to finish, but a comic book artist is working with a deadline. They just keep churning out great work over and over and over. Daniel Johnston ist 2019 im Alter von 58 Jahren an einem Herzinfarkt gestorben.
