Ein weiteres Mal Daniel Johnston, diesmal mit dem tollen Song "Devil Town". I was livin' in a devil town / Didn't know it was a devil town / Oh lord it really brings me down / About the devil town / And all my friends were vampires / Didn't know they were vampires. Der Song stammt vom Album "1990", das 1990 beim Label Shimmy-Disc erschienen ist. Daniel Johnston spielt alle Instrumente auf diesem Album selbst, nur beim Song "Spirit World Rising" wird er von den Musikern Lee Ranaldo und Steve Shelley von der Band Sonic Youth unterstützt. Yeah! Und beim Song "Some Things Last A Long Time" spielt Kramer mit, der das Album auch produziert hat. Kramer alias Stephen Michael Bonner war der Betreiber von Shimmy-Disc und dem Recording Studio Noise New York. Kramer hat mehrere Soloalben veröffentlicht, spielte in Bands wie B.A.L.L., Bongwater, Shockabilly, Brainville oder Captain Howdy und veröffentlichte Alben mit Musiker*innen wie Dogbowl alias Stephen Tunney, Daevid Allen, Hugh Hopper oder Jad Fair. Daniel Johnston hat neben seinen Soloalben auch 4 Alben mit der Band Danny & The Nightmares veröffentlicht, die aus Daniel Johnston (Vocals, Guitar, Piano, Drums), Jason Nightmare alias Jason Damron (Guitar, Bass, Farfisa Organ) und Bridget Nightmare alias Bridget Gallo (Drums, Flute, Moog Organ) bestand. Mit Jack Medicine alias Don Goede bildete er das Duo The Electric Ghosts und zu dritt mit Ron English die tolle Band Hyperjinx Tricycle. Ja, und 1987 veröffentlichte er mit der Band Drug Zombies beim Label Fiasco Productions die Kassette "All Our Best". Die Drug Zombies waren Daniel Johnston (Vocals, Guitar, Trombone), David Eccles (Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Keyboards, Effects) und Paul Horsley (Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards, Drums, Tape, Effects). Daniel Johnston: Aaaah, The Beatles! Number one with me! I love The Beatles. They changed my life. When I first heard their records when I was a senior in high school I was really a shy kid... I was… a dork. You know, I was afraid of the girls. I was really shy. But when I started collecting The Beatles albums, I started speaking in an English accent and coming on to the girls, writing songs and stuff like that. (...) They inspired me to pretend like I was The Beatles! And I started writing songs all the time. I was having a lot of fun. Unbedingt solltet man sich von Daniel Johnston das 2004 bei Gammon Records erschienene Doppelalbum "The Late Great Daniel Johnston - Discovered Covered" anschaffen. Auf einem der beiden Alben sind die Originalsongs von Daniel Johnston und auf dem anderen werden diese Songs von Leuten wie Tom Waits, Gordon Gano, Sparklehorse, Calvin Johnson oder Eels gecovert. Toll! "Devil Town" wird auf diesem Doppelalbum von den Bright Eyes gecovert, Conor Oberst (Guitar), Maria Taylor (Drums, Organ, Vocals) und Nick Zinner (Guitar). Turns out I was a vampire myself / In the devil town / I was livin' in a devil town / Didn't know it was a devil town / Oh lord it really brings me down / About the devil town. Meine Lieblingscoverversionen auf diesem Doppelalbum sind "Sorry Entertainer" von Calvin Johnson und "King Kong" von Tom Waits. Daniel Johnston ist leider 2019 im Alter von 58 Jahren an einem Herzinfarkt gestorben. Traurig, traurig.
