ESG steht für Emerald, Sapphire und Gold, yeah, Mutant Disco aus New York City. ESG wurde 1978 in der South Bronx gegründet und bestand anfangs aus den Schwestern Renee (Vocals), Valerie (Drums, Vocals), Deborah (Bass, Vocals) und Marie Scroggins (Congas, Vocals) sowie Tito Libran (Congas). Anfang der 80er Jahre unterzeichneten sie bei 99 Records, wo die beiden EPs "ESG" 1981, "ESG Says Dance To The Beat Of Moody" 1982 und das Debütalbum "Come Away With ESG" 1983 erschienen. Von 1985 bis 1991 war die Band laut wikipedia inaktiv, was so nicht ganz stimmen kann, da 1987 auf dem eigenen Label Emerald Sapphire & Gold Records die EP "Bam-Bam Jam" erschien. Egal. Im Jahr 1991 erschien auf jeden Fall bei Pow Wow Records das zweite Album "ESG" und die Single "Erase You / Standing In Line". Nächste Station war Nega Fulô Records, wo 1992 die EP "Sample Credits Don’t Pay Our Bills" und 1995 das Live-Album "ESG Live!" erschienen. Bei diesem Live-Album sind die Schwestern Renee, Valerie und Marie Scroggins sowie David Miles (Guitar) und Leroy Glover (Bass) mit dabei. Nach einer längeren Pause gings dann wieder 2002 so richtig los und bei Soul Jazz Records erschienen die beiden Alben "Step Off" 2002 und "Keep On Moving" 2006. Außer Renee, Valerie und Marie Scroggins gehörten nun Chistelle Polite alias Christelle Scroggins (Guitar) und Nicole Nicholas alias Nicole Scroggins (Bass) zur Band, also ESG sind nun eine All-Female-Band. Christelle und Nicole sind die Töchter von Valerie Scroggins. Bei Fire Records erschien 2010 die DoppelCD "Dance To The Best Of ESG", eine tolle Compilation mit Aufnahmen aus den Jahren 1981 bis 2006, die eigentlich in keiner Popsammlung fehlen sollte. Der Song "You Make No Sense" ist da leider nicht drauf, der ist auf der 2003 bei Soul Jazz Records erschienenen Compilation "New York Noise - Dance Music From The New York Underground 1978-1982" zu finden. Hmm, bis 1982 ist etwas merkwürdig, da "You Make No Sense" erst auf dem Debütalbum "Come Away With ESG" 1983 erschien. Egal. Irgendwie scheints mit dem kommerziellen Erfolg nicht so recht zu klappen bei ESG, ist einerseits wahrscheinlich eh besser so, andererseits ists oft schwierig, ohne ein bisschen Erfolg mit der Musik Geld zu verdienen. Bei Fire Records erschienen auch die Singles "Dance / Tiny Sticks" 2010 und "Erase You" 2012, eine Splitsingle, der Song "Erase You" wird auf der A-Side von ESG und auf der B-Side von der Band Las Kellies gespielt, das sind Ceci (Guitar, Vocals), Betty (Bass, Vocals) und Sil Kelly (Drums, Vocals), 3 Schwestern aus Buenos Aires, Argentinien. Seither sind von ESG noch die beiden Alben "Closure" 2012 und "What More Can You Take" 2017 beim eigenen Label ESG Records erschienen. Valerie Scroggins: ESG is a bit of everything really. At the end of the day, music is music. It comes from the heart and the mind; it doesn't matter to me as much. If I had to use one word I'd say we're pretty funky! (...) The way that things started happening was music in the house hold. Growing up in The Bronx what we heard was James Brown, Patti Labelle, Aretha Franklin; that sort of thing. My drumming is really influenced by those breakdown parts in James Brown songs. I'd take that part and stretch it out for a whole song. The sound comes from being in the street and being around other kids in the parks and stuff like that. It was just something in me. I started beatin' on pots and pans and on my thighs and legs at school. It was just something in me. So, zum Abschluss noch ein Ratschlag von Valerie Scroggins für junge Schlagzeugerinnen: I say practice, practice, practice and don't let anyone tell you that you can't play. Start on the high hat and everything else will fall into place. And as far as young women of color, I think drums are drums. It doesn't matter who's behind them. The drums come from the soul and the mind and the heart and the spirit. Just go out there and beat the drums. Hey, do you play? ESG sind toll, yeah.
