"Relax" wurde die Nummer 1 in Großbritannien, Deutschland und der Schweiz, in Österreich schaffte es der Song auf Platz 4 der Ö3-Hitparade und in den USA auf Platz 10. Frankie Goes To Hollywood wurde 1980 von Holly Johnson (Vocals), Paul Rutherford (Vocals), Brian Nash (Guitar), Mark O’Toole (Bass) und Peter Gill (Drums) in Liverpool gegründet. Holly Johnson hatte davor in der Punkband Big In Japan Bass gespielt. Den Bandnamen entnahmen die Musiker einen Zeitungsartikel über Frank Sinatra, mit der Überschrieft "Frankie Goes Hollywood". Holly Johnson und Paul Rutherford bekannten sich offen zu ihrer Homosexualität, was zwar für Aufregung sorgte, aber dem kommerziellen Erfolg der Band nicht weiters im Wege stand. Produzent der Band war Trevor Horn. Beim Hit "Relax" war eigentlich nur Sänger Holly Johnson an den Aufnahmen beteiligt. Trevor Horn: Faktisch gab es zwar keine Aufnahmen mit der Band, aber die ganze Atmosphäre kam von ihr. Im Jahr 1984 hatten Frankie Goes To Hollywood mit den Songs "Two Tribes" und "The Power Of Love" weitere große Hits und auch das Debütalbum "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" war kommerziell erfolgreich. I'm coming / I'm coming / Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Das Album sollte eigentlich in keiner Popsammlung fehlen. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Nach diesem Album trennten sich Band und Produzent. Ob Frankie Goes To Hollywood oder Trevor Horn diese Trennung herbeiführte, weiß ich nicht. Egal. Frankie Goes to Hollywood hatten 1986 mit dem von Stephen Lipson produzierten Song "Rage Hard" einen weiteren Hit und auch das zweite Album "Liverpool" verkaufte sich ganz gut, doch 1987 löste sich die Band wegen interner Streitigkeiten auf. Die beiden Sänger, Holly Johnson und Paul Rutherford, veröffentlichten 1989 ihre Solodebütalben, Holly Johnson "Blast" bei UNI Records und Paul Rutherford "Oh World" bei Island Records. Relax / Don't do it / When you wanna go to it / What's inside me? / Relax. Von 2004 bis 2007 waren Frankie Goes To Hollywood dann nochmals in der Popwelt unterwegs, aber ohne Holly Johnson. Die Band bestand in dieser Zeit aus Ryan Molloy (Vocals), Paul Rutherford (Vocals), Jed O’Toole (Guitar), Mark O’Toole (Bass) und Peter Gill (Drums). Im Jahr 1991 hatte Holly Johnson erfahren, dass er HIV-positiv ist. Er machte 1993 seine Erkrankung öffentlich. Sein bisher letztes Soloalbum "Europa" erschien 2014 bei Pleasuredome Records und schaffte es auf Platz 13 der UK Indie-Charts. Holly Johnson: I wanted to make the kind of records that I heard in the discos that I danced in at that time. Funky, electronic sounds, while the musicians in the band were more rock oriented. This I suppose created the sound we know as Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Von Paul Rutherford erschien zuletzt 2010 bei Beatfarm Records das Album "The Cowboy Years", aber unter dem Pseudonym Butt Cowboy. Paul Rutherford: We were a bunch of boys, bent on getting pissed and having a laugh. We used to dress up in leather clothes and S&M stuff and they loved it. It was meant to be fun: 'Let’s drop a little acid and go nuts.' It was controlled mayhem. Der Song "Relax" erschien 1983 mit "One September Monday" auf der B-Side bei ZTT Records als Single. Er ist auch auf dem Doppelalbum "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" 1984 zu finden, das alle Jahre wieder in irgendeiner Form auf den Markt kommt und sich immer noch gut verkauft. Als Gastmusiker*innen sind auf diesem Album auch Anne Dudley und Andy Richards von der Band The Art Of Noise mit dabei. Frankie Goes To Hollywood waren great, yeah!
