Der Song "Satellite" ist auf dem 2000 bei Thrill Jockey Records erschienenen Album "Chore Of Enchantment" zu finden. Alternative Country Rock, yeah. Giant Sand bestanden damals aus Howe Gelb (Vocals, Guitar, Sitar, Accordion, Piano, Organ, Mellotron, Synthesizer), Joe Burns (Bass, Guitar, Cello, Backing Vocals) und John Convertino (Drums), bei den Aufnahmen von "Chore Of Enchantment" halfen aber noch die Musiker*innen Neil Harry (Pedal Steel Guitar), David Mansfield (Pedal Steel Guitar, Banjo), Rainer Ptacek (Slide Guitar), Kevin Salem (Guitar, Mellotron, Loops), Jim Dickinson (Mellotron, Piano, Organ), Rob Arthur (Mellotron), John Parish (Piano, Organ), Nick Luca (Piano), Rob Arthur (Organ), John Abbey (Bass), Scott Loder (Bass), Paula Brown (Bass, Backing Vocals), Rich Mercurio (Drums) und Alan Bezozi (Loops) sowie die Backgroundsänger*innen Jackie Johnson, Susan Marshall-Powell, William Brown, Juliana Hatfield, Sofie Albertsen Gelb und Lydia Kavanaugh mit. Ja, Howe Gelb hat eben viele Freund*innen. Ende der 70er Jahre gründete Howe Gelb die Band Giant Sandworms aus der dann 1985 Giant Sand wurde. Die Band ist in Tucson, Arizona zu Hause. Beim eigenen Label Black Sand Records erschien 1985 das Debütalbum "Valley Of Rain" in der Besetzung Howe Gelb, Scott Garber (Bass, Harmonium), Tom Larkins (Drums) und Winston A. Watson Jr. (Drums), bei einzelnen Songs halfen noch Lisa Vernon (Guitar), Chris Cacavas (Piano) und Mary Wehner (Backing Vocals) mit. Die Songs stammten alle aus der Feder von Howe Gelb, dem Fixstern bei Giant Sand. Auf dem zweiten Album "Ballad Of A Thin Line Man", das 1986 bei Zippo Records erschien, sind auch 2 Coverversionen enthalten, "All Along The Watchtower" von Bob Dylan und "You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory" von Johnny Thunders. Neben Howe Gelb, Scott Garber und Tom Larkins gehörten nun Paula Jean Brown (Vocals, Guitar) und Hans Reumschüssel (Cello) zur Band. Naja, eigentlich änderte sich die Besetzung von Album zu Album, einige Musiker*innen tauchen immer wieder mal bei Giant Sand auf, andere nur ein Mal und nie wieder, yeah. Erst auf dem sechsten Album "Swerve", das 1990 bei Demon Records erschien, gab es wieder eine Coverversion und zwar "Every Grain Of Sand" von Bob Dylan. Im Jahr 1990 erschien auch noch ein zweites Album mit dem schönen Titel "As Quick As A Cup Of Hot Liquor Sucked Down A Spiney Iced Throat" bei Unhinged Records, auf dem gibt es ebenfalls 2 Coverversionen, "The Weight" von The Band und "You Can't Always Get What You Want" von den Rolling Stones. Die Songs von Howe Gelb bzw. Giant Sand sind toll, aber Giant Sand sind auch eine ebenso tolle Coverband. Bei Thrill Jockey erschien 2002 ein Album mit fast lauter Coverversionen, "Cover Magazine", darauf gibts u.a. Versionen von Songs von Neil Young, Black Sabbath, Goldfrapp, Sonny & Cher, PJ Harvey, Johnny Cash, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds und Kris Kristofferson. Yeah, you can still throttle / And brake with the best of them / If only in certain time and pendulum / What are you going to say / When a little one gets in your way / And asks the question of the day, "Are you ok?" / Never mind speaking your mind / And shoving it all the way up there / Satellite is just a sad old light / And still ill equipped to care. Bei Return To Sender Records erschien 1994 ein Album mit dem lustigen Titel "Stromausfall", es wurde dann 2011 bei Fire Records unter dem Titel "Black Out" neu aufgelegt. Schade, Stromausfall klingt doch um vieles besser als Black Out. Zwischendurch veröffentlichte Howe Gelb Soloalben oder Alben mit Bandprojekten wie The Band Of Blacky Ranchette, Arizona Amp And Alternator, Melted Wires oder Howe Gelb & The Fun Machine. Zuletzt erschienen von Giant Sand bei Fire Records die Alben "Returns To Valley Of Rain" 2018 und "Recounting The Ballads Of Thin Line Man" 2019, das sind Neueinspielungen ihrer ersten beiden Alben. Komischerweise nicht ganz, bei "Recounting The Ballads Of Thin Line Man" fehlen z.B. die Songs "All Along The Watchtower" und "Last Legs", dafür sind die Songs "Reptillian" und "Tantamount" neu dabei. Es wurde in der Besetzung Howe Gelb, Tom Larkins und Thøger Lund (Bass) aufgenommen. Howe Gelb: Recording is best used as a pretty good reason to hang with the family of friends globally scattered. Die Tonträger von Giant Sand bzw. Howe Gelb sind zahlreich, yeah, in meiner Sammlung befinden sich die Alben "Backyard Barbecue Broadcast" 1995, "Chore Of Enchantment" 2000, "Tucson - A Country Rock Opera" 2012 von Giant Sand, "Sage Advice" 1990 von The Band Of Blacky Ranchette und "Alegrias" 2011 von Howe Gelb & A Band Of Gypsies. Das Album "Tucson - A Country Rock Opera" erschien genau genommen unter dem Namen Giant Giant Sand. So, Schluss für heute, morgen muss ich früh raus.
