Grunge, yeah. Die Band Hole wurde 1989 von Courtney Love alias Courtney Michelle Harrison (Vocals, Guitar) und Eric Erlandson (Guitar) in Los Angeles, Kalifornien gegründet. Mit dabei waren Anfangs noch Mike Geisbrecht (Guitar), Lisa Roberts (Bass) und Caroline Rue (Drums, Percussion). Mike Geisbrecht und Lisa Roberts verließen die Band aber bereits 1990 wieder und Jill Emery kam als neue Bassistin dazu. In dieser Besetzung erschien 1991 bei Caroline Records das Debütalbum "Pretty On The Inside". Produziert wurde das Album von den Musiker*innen Kim Gordon und Don Fleming. Kim Gordon spielte 1991 bei Sonic Youth und Don Fleming bei Gumball. Don Fleming: Courtney was great at the time - it was before she even knew Kurt. She gave 180%. I've worked with some people that you've had to coax the performance out of them. With Courtney, there was no attitude. She was gonna give it all. And she did and it was really impressive to me. I loved the whole band, they were a lot of fun. That early lineup of Hole - I felt they were the real deal. They were Hollywood misfits - all of them. I felt it really captured what they were. Mit Kurt ist Kurt Cobain, Courtneys späterer Ehemann, gemeint. Bereits 1990 war von Hole die Single "Retard Girl / Phonebill Song / Johnnie’s In The Bathroom" beim Label Sympathy For The Record Industry erschienen. Das nächste Album "Live Through This" erschien 1994 bei DGC Records, DGC steht für David Geffen Company. Mit dem Song "Doll Parts" schafften es Hole 1994 in die Top Ten der US-Alternative-Charts. Das Album war auch in Großbritannien und Australien sehr erfolgreich. Jill Emery und Caroline Rue waren beim zweiten Album nicht mehr mit dabei, die neue Bassistin war nun Kristen Pfaff, die auch Piano spielte, und hinter den Drums saß Patty Schemel. Kristen Pfaff starb 1994 im Alter von 27 Jahren, als Todesursache wurde acute opiate intoxication angegeben. Die neue Bassistin wurde dann Melissa Auf der Maur, die davor mit der Band Tinker in der Popwelt unterwegs gewesen war. In dieser Besetzung erschien 1998 bei DGC Records das Album "Celebrity Skin", das bisher erfolgreichste Album der Band, die sich im Jahr 2000 vorerst auflöste. Courtney Love war inzwischen Witwe, da sich Kurt Cobain 1994 im Alter von 27 Jahren erschossen hatte. Im Jahr 1996 wurde sie durch ihre Rolle der Althea Leasure im Film "The People vs. Larry Flynt" zum Schauspielstar. Sie bekam dafür insgesamt 7 Awards überreicht. Im Jahr 2004 erschien bei Virgin Records das bisher einzige Soloalbum von Courtney Love, "America’s Sweetheart", mit dem sie aber nicht so recht glücklich war. Courtney Love: The sound on "America’s Sweetheart" sucked beyond words. The production was a nightmare. Linda and I had written some really good songs, but they were rendered lazily and sound like shit. The art was horrific and not my idea and the label didn't back it at all. I was busy taking drugs to dull the pain of having lost everything and made a shit album to boot (...) the producer didn't know what he was doing and he just spent my money. Mit Linda ist Linda Perry gemeint, die manchen von euch von der Band 4 Non Blondes bekannt sein könnte. Produzent des Albums war Josh Abraham. Hm, ich persönlich mag das Album irgendwie sehr gerne, es ist zwar soundmäßig gar arg glattpoliert, aber mit Courtney Love als Sängerin und Gitarristin ist es fast unmöglich alles Unebene wegzuschleifen. Im Jahr 2010 kehrte Courtney Love dann mit Hole und dem bei Mercury Records erschienenen Album "Nobody’s Daughter" in die Popwelt zurück. An ihrer Seite waren nun Micko Larkin (Guitar), Shawn Dailey (Bass) und Stu Fisher (Drums). Mit den Songs "Skinny Little Bitch" und "Pacific Coast Highway" hatte die Band 2 Hits in den USA. Hole lösten sich 2012 endgültig auf, seither gab es von Courtney Love musikalisch wenig zu hören. Die letzten Konzerte spielten Hole aber wieder in der Besetzung von 1994 bis 1998, Courtney Love (Vocals, Guitar), Eric Erlandson (Guitar), Melissa Auf der Maur (Bass, Backing Vocals) und Patty Schemel (Drums). Drummerin Patty Schemel ist aktuell mit der Band Upset in der Popwelt unterwegs, von Eric Erlandson und Melissa An der Maur gibt es aktuell auch nichts zu hören. Als Schauspielerin war Courtney Love zuletzt 2018 im Film "J.T. LeRoy" von Regisseur Justin Kelly zu sehen. Der Song "Retard Girl" erschien 1990 als Single, ist aber auch auf der 1997 beim Label Sympathy For The Record Industry erschienenen EP "The First Session" sowie auf der 1997 bei City Slang Records erschienenen Hole-Compilation "My Body, The Hand Grenade" zu finden. Courtney Love: I want every girl in the world to pick up a guitar and start screaming. Courtney Love hat zwar 2019 eine Reunion von Hole angedeutet, aber bisher ist leider nichts in diese Richtung passiert. So, und jetzt hört euch bei youtube noch den Song "Syncopate" 1966 von der Band The Astronauts an. The Astronauts waren eine Ska bzw. Rocksteady-Band aus Jamaika, die von Mitte der 60er bis Mitte der 90er eine Menge Singles veröffentlichte und sich zwischendurch auch mal The Austronauts oder The Astronaughts schrieben. Die Single "Before You Leave / Syncopate" erschien 1966 in Jamaika bei Halagala Records und wurde 1967 von Island Records auch in Europa veröffentlicht. Eine Zeit lang gehörte jedenfalls der Musiker und Produzent Barry Biggs zu den Astronauts. Barry Biggs war in den 60er Jahren auch mit den Bands Byron Lee & The Dragonaires und The Crystalites in Jamaika unterwegs und startete mit dem 1976 beim Label Dynamic Sounds erschienenen Album "Mr. Biggs" eine Solokarriere. Zuletzt erschien von ihm 2021 das Album "I've Got It Covered". Mr. Biggs feiert 2022 seinen 75sten Geburtstag. Hoch soll er leben, hoch soll er leben, dreimal hoch!
