Jandek wurde 1945 als Sterling Richard Smith in Houston, Texas geboren. Er gründete Ende der 70er Jahre das Label Corwood Industries, dort erschien 1978 sein erstes Album "Ready For The House" unter dem Bandnamen The Units. Im Jahr 1981 erschienen dann die ersten beiden Alben, "Six And Six" und "Later On", unter dem Pseudonym Jandek. LoFi-Avantgarde-Texas-Blues, yeah, oder einfacher gesagt, Outsider Pop. Seither sind bei Corwood Industries über 100 Alben von Jandek erschienen. Wow. Bis zu seinem ersten Konzert 2004 in Glasgow, Schottland, ist Jandek nie als Person in Erscheinung getreten, seine Alben konnte man bei der Adresse Corwood Industries, P.O. Box 15375, Houston, Texas 77220 USA bestellen, später dann auch per Internet, www.corwoodindustries.com. Bei seinem ersten Konzert in Glasgow wurde Jandek von den britischen Musikern Richard Youngs (Bass) und Alex Neilson (Drums) begleitet. Jandek hat keine fixe Begleitband, sondern performt seine Songs live, wenn er nicht sowieso solo auftritt, mit lokalen Musiker*innen. Bei seinem ersten Konzert in den USA, 2005 im Scottish Rite Theatre in Austin, Texas wurde er von Juan Garcia (Bass), Sara Hennies (Drums) und Chris Cogburn (Drums) begleitet. Bei einem Konzert am Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston 2007 hatte er Greg Kelley (Trumpet), Jorrit Dijkstra (Alto Saxophone, Lyricon) und Eli Keszler (Percussion) an seiner Seite. Das bisher größte Projekt, das Jandek bei Corwood Industries verwirklichte, war die 9-CD-Box "The Song Of Morgan" 2013, jede CD enthält einen Piano-Longtrack ohne Gesang. Douglas Wolk schreibt in "Mystery Man - The Jandek Story" 1999 über ihn: The longest-running, weirdest, loneliest enigma in popular music is a guy from Texas who calls himself Jandek. Sometimes Jandek sounds as if he'd internalized the grimmest death-letter blues of the '20s and is pulling them back out of himself, thoroughly dismembered, hair by hair. His songs have no choruses, no hooks, no melodies, no rhythms, no internal progression, nothing but the inexorable Chinese-water-torture plod of Samuel Becketts "The Unnameable": I can't go on, I'll go on. Und Kate Vine schreibt in "Jandek And Me" 1999: And that's before you hear the music. You cannot play air guitar to Jandek, and you can't snap your fingers or sing along. It sounds like his guitar strings are horribly out of tune, yet he strums away as if nothing is wrong. His songs typically last for two to four minutes. His guitar playing - if you can call it that - usually consists of his repeating two chords over and over. He begins by singing in a high voice, holding notes for long periods, and sometimes slides down the scale, reciting dark, deeply personal lyrics so close to the microphone that it's impossible to imagine him performing. It's more like he has crawled in between your ears and sat down for a pow-wow. Ich liebe Jandek, yeah, Jandek macht süchtig. Der Song "The Cat That Walked From Shelbyville" stammt von seinem 15ten Album "You Walk Alone", das 1987 bei Corwood Industries erschienen ist und 2002 ebendort als CD wiederveröffentlicht wurde. Kauft euch einfach irgendein Jandek-Album und ihr werdet begeistert sein, yeah. Bei youtube oder vimeo kann man sich auch einiges von Jandek anhören und ansehen. Ja, Jandek darf einfach in keiner Popsammlung fehlen.
