Jeru The Damaja wurde 1972 als Kendrick Jeru Davis in New York geboren. Als Rapper ist er zum ersten Mal auf dem Album "Daily Operation" 1992 des HipHop-Duos Gang Starr zu hören, wo er beim Song "I'm The Man" als Gast-Rapper mit dabei ist. Im Jahr 1993 erschien seine erste Single "Come Clean" und 1994 sein Debütalbum "The Sun Rises In The East", auf dem auch der Song "Mental Stamina" zu finden ist. Sowohl die Single als auch das Album erschienen bei Payday Records, bei diesem Label erschien auch das zweite Album "Wrath Of The Math" 1996, das bisher erfolgreichste von Jeru The Damaja. Das nächste Album "Heroz4Hire" erschien 1999 bei seinem eigenen Label Know Savage Productions, bei 4 Songs des Albums ist Miz Marvel alias Endancheyelem Amare als Gast-Rapper mit dabei. Das Q Magazine schrieb über das Album: Creative and coherent... the lyrics are intelligent, and the record benefits from contributions by the very talented Miz Marvel. Trotz guter Kritiken schaffte es das Album und die daraus ausgekoppelten Singles "Billie Jean (Safe Sex)", "99,9%" und "Blak Luv" nicht in die Charts. Danach gabs noch die beiden Alben "Divine Design" 2003 und "Still Rising" 2007 bei Ashenafi Records, das von Jeru The Damaja 2003 gegründet wurde. Seither ist es ruhig um Jeru The Damaja geworden, im Jahr 2016 erschienen beim Label Slice-Of-Spice die beiden 12"-Singles "Solar Flares" und "The Dirty Rotten Demos". Immerhin. Seit 2013 kündigt Jeru The Damaja immer wieder mal ein neues Album an, doch... leider nein. Jeru The Damaja ist nicht nur Rapper, sondern auch Vegetarier: The best way to show anybody anything is through your actions. So, when we sit down to eat and they notice that I’m not eating anything that used to be alive - and when I say 'alive', I shouldn’t say 'alive' because fruits and vegetables are alive, but anything that had a soul, or a spirit, or anything with flesh that if you cooked me and you cooked it, you probably couldn’t tell the difference - people ask questions like, 'Why don’t you eat that - is it because of religion?', and I tell them it’s not because of religion, it’s because I love myself, and I know that if I eat a certain way, I’ll live better, my cholesterol will be lower, my eyes will look better, my hair will look better, my nails will grow longer. Ja, Jeru The Damaja ist irgendwie anscheinend ein netter Mensch und kein böser Gangsta-Rapper: I think they can’t get over that until they start loving themselves. If you love yourself, you’re not going to want to harm anybody - you understand what I’m saying? It’s like Jesus said, he was like, 'You’re supposed to love your brother like you love yourself', and I think that’s a message that was really overlooked, even in religion - the main goal of any religion is self-realization. Once you realize yourself, know yourself, and love yourself, then you can treat your brother that way, you see. But, what the world is based on now is that religion is just like a set of rules - do this, do that, don’t do this, don’t do that - and with rules, we know that for certain people, the more you make rules, the harder they’re going to try to break those rules. They’re going to find more conniving ways to get around those rules, just not to get caught. I love that song, 'What the world needs now is love, sweet love', you know, because it’s the only thing that there’s just too little of. I just believe in peace. To me, that’s key - peace is key. So, und jetzt mach ich mir einen Kaffee und dann hören wir uns noch gemeinsam den tollen Song "What On Earth" von Blossom Toes an, der 1967 auf ihrem Album "We Are Ever So Clean" bei Marmalade Records erschien. Die Blossom Toes waren eine englische Psychedelic Band und bestanden aus den Musikern Brian Godding (Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards), Jim Cregan (Guitar, Vocals), Brian Belshaw (Bass, Vocals) und Kevin Westlake (Drums, Vocals). Bei Marmalade Records erschien 1969 noch das zweite und letzte Album "If Only For A Moment" von den Blossom Toes.
