Den Song "Lone Star Justice" von Kay Kay & The Rays habe ich auf der 2006 bei Trikont Records erschienenen Compilation "In Prison (Afroamerican Prison Music From Blues To Hiphop)" entdeckt. Rhythm'n'Blues, yeah. Der Song ist aber bereits auf dem Album "Texas Justice" von Kay Kay & The Rays zu finden, das 2001 bei DSS Records erschienen ist. Kay Kay & The Rays sind Kay Kay Greenwade (Vocals), Dan Ferguson (Keyboards), Jeff Eads (Guitar), Bob Trenchard (Bass) und Ritchie Puga (Drums), als Gastmusiker sind beim Song "Lone Star Justice" noch Johnny Rawls (Guitar), Andy Roman (Saxophone), Roberts Hinds (Trumpet) und Alan Hanna (Trumpet) mit dabei. Johnny Rawls hat das Album auch produziert. Außer dem Album "Texas Justice" gibt es von Kay Kay & The Rays noch die Alben "Lucky 7" 2000 und "Big Bad Girl" 2003, ersteres erschien bei Worpt Records und zweiteres bei Topcat Records. The song "Big Bad Girl" says she was six feet one with three inch heels. That was Kay Kay, the big woman with the big voice who could bring the crowd to its feet cheering. The music of Kay Kay and the Rays was fusion of soul, funk and blues. The lyrics were often social and political commentary, ist auf der website Bman's Blues Report über die Band zu lesen. Das Letzte, was ich von Kay Kay & The Rays rausfinden konnte, ist, dass die Band 2004 in Australien beim East Coast Blues & Roots Festival aufgetreten sind. The best of the fest was a photo finish between Dr. John, Kay Kay and the Rays and Solomon Burke. Kay Kay can sing in the true tradition of black female vocalists and is a cross between Koko and Aretha. The Rays were wild and smokin' and included a dynamo sax player. Mit Koko und Aretha sind hier wohl Koko Taylor und Aretha Franklin gemeint, leider beide bereits verstorben. Koko Taylor starb 2009 im Alter von 80 Jahren und Aretha Franklin 2018 im Alter von 76 Jahren. Oh, leider noch was entdeckt, Kay Kay Greenwade ist 2012 im Alter von 56 Jahren verstorben. Hört euch auch den Song "Wayward Wind" von Tooter Boatman & The Chapparals an. Die Band existierte von 1957 bis 1963 und bestand aus Tooter Boatman (Vocals, Guitar), Bill Bland (Guitar), Shorty Dinglar (Slap Bass), Charlie O'Bannon (Piano) und Clay Glover (Drums). Wann genau der Song aufgenommen wurde, weiß ich nicht, er ist auf jedem Fall auf der 1992 bei Collector Records erschienenen Compilation "Rockin' Tooter Boatman" zu finden. Toller Rockabilly, yeah. Tooter Boatman starb 1964 im Alter von 28 Jahren bei einem Verkehrsunfall, er wurde von einem Auto überfahren, der Fahrer begann Fahrerflucht.
