Killing Joke wurde 1978 von Jaz Coleman (Vocals, Keyboards), Geordie Walker (Guitar), Martin 'Youth' Glover (Bass) und Big Paul Ferguson (Drums) in London, England gegründet. Im Jahr 1979 erschienen die beiden EPs "Turn To Red" und "Almost Red" beim Label Malicious Damage. Danach unterschrieb die Band bei E.G. Records, wo sie bis Ende der 80er Jahre 7 Studioalben veröffentlichte, von "Killing Joke" 1980 bis "Outside The Gate" 1988. Die kommerziell erfolgreichsten waren "Night Time" 1985 und "Brighter Than A Thousand Suns" 1986. Der größte Hit von Killing Joke war "Love Like Blood" 1985. Martin 'Youth' Glover verließ nach dem Album "Revelations" 1982 die Band, für ihn kam Paul Raven von der Band Neon Hearts. Big Paul Ferguson ging 1987, der neue Drummer wurde Jimmy Copley, der aber nur auf dem Album "Outside The Gate" zu hören ist, nach ihm übernahm Martin Atkins, der auch nicht lange blieb und Anfang der 90er Jahre die Band Pigface gründete. Ab 1984 gehörte auch Keyboarder Dave Kovacevic zu Killing Joke. Nach dem Album "Outside The Gate" verlängerte E.G. Records den Vertrag nicht mehr und das nächste Album "Extremities, Dirt & Various Repressed Emotions" 1990 erschien beim deutschen Label Noise International. Irgendwie schien das Ende von Killing Joke nahe, doch Jaz Coleman und Geordie Walker gaben nicht auf, holten Martin 'Youth' Glover zurück in die Band und mit dem neuen Drummer Geoff Dugmore erschien 1994 das neue Album "Pandemonium" bei Butterfly Records. Im Jahr 1996 gabs dann noch das Album "Democracy" bei Big Life Records und dann war vorerst Schluss mit Killing Joke. Geordie Walker wurde composer-in-residence beim Czech symphony orchestra. Doch 2002 kehrten Killing Joke in die Popwelt zurück und 2003 erschien das neue Album "Killing Joke" bei Zuma Records. Die Band bestand nun aus Jaz Coleman, Geordie Walker, Martin 'Youth' Glover, Paul Raven und dem Ex-Nirvana Drummer Dave Grohl. Martin 'Youth' Glover und Dave Grohl blieben aber nicht lange dabei, beim nächsten Album "Hosannas From The Basements Of Hell" 2006, das bei Cooking Vinyl Records erschien, saß Ben Calvert hinterm Schlagzeug. Im Jahr 2007 lösten sich Killing Joke zum zweiten Mal auf, als Bassist Paul Raven nach einem Herzinfarkt starb. Doch Killing Joke kehrten noch einmal zurück und zwar in der Originalbesetzung Jaz Coleman, Geordie Walker, Martin 'Youth' Glover und Big Paul Ferguson. Bei Spinefarm Records erschien 2010 das neue Album "Absolute Dissent". Martin 'Youth' Glover: We have survived equipment being hi-jacked, tapes being withheld, nervous breakdowns, family bereavements, blood lettings, and a host of other challenges of Biblical proportions, But we are now at the final ascent, and I have to say it's one of the greatest albums I have ever had the privilege to be involved with… EVER! I have been living and breathing it for over four months now, and I'm still jaw-droppingly amazed at its power & beauty. Seither sind bei Spinefarm Records noch die beiden Alben "MMXII" 2012 und "Pylon" 2015 erschienen, die es beide in den USA in die Top 10 der Albumcharts schafften. Spinefarm Records ist ein finnisches Heavy-Metal-Label. Killing Joke begann mit Gothic Punk, dann kam Gothic Rock und jetzt waren sie bei Gothic Metal angekommen. Mir persönlich war die Gothic-Punk-Phase am liebsten, yeah. Der Song "Eighties" ist auf der 1995 bei Virgin Records erschienenen Compilation "The Best Punk Album In The World ... Ever!" zu finden. Diese Compilation ist hörenswert, obwohl sie nur an der ohnedies allseits bekannten Oberfläche von Punk kratzt und für Kenner*innen nichts wirklich Überraschendes bietet. Ich hab sie mal zum Geburtstag geschenkt bekommen. Habe gerade den Song "Amie" 1972 von der Band Pure Prairie League für mich entdeckt. Diese us-amerikanische Country-Rock-Band wurde 1970 von Craig Fuller (Vocals, Guitar, Bass), George Ed Powell (Vocals, Guitar), Robin Suskind (Guitar), John David Call (Pedal Steel Guitar, Banjo, Dobro), Phil Stokes (Bass) und Tom McGrail (Drums) gegründet. Der Song "Amie" ist einfach fantastischer Country-Pop-Kitsch. Yeah!
