Indie-Synth-Pop, yeah. The Magnetic Fields ist die Band des Sängers und Multiinstrumentalisten Stephin Merritt und wurde 1989 in Boston gegründet. Naja, Band ist fast eine Übertreibung, beim Debütalbum "Distant Plastic Trees", das 1991 bei Red Flame Records erschien, wurde Stephin Merritt nur von der Sängerin Susan Anway unterstützt. Beim zweiten Album "The Wayward Bus" 1992 standen ihm dann neben Susan Anway noch Claudia Gonson (Cocktail Drums), Sam Davol (Cello) und Johnny Blood (Tuba, Horns) zur Seite. Der Song "The Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side" ist auf dem 3er-Album "69 Love Songs" zu finden, das 1999 bei Merge Records erschien, es ist das sechste Studioalbum der Magnetic Fields. Auf diesem Album wird Stephin Merritt von zahlreichen Musiker*innen unterstützt, yeah. Zur Band gehörig sind nun laut Beiheft neben Stephin Merritt noch Sam Davol (Cello, Flute), Claudia Gonson (Piano, Drums, Percussion, Vocals, Guitar) und John Woo (Banjo, Guitar, Mandolin, Bass), aber an den Aufnahmen sind auch noch die Musiker*innen LD Begthol (Harmonium, Vocals), Chris Ewen (Theremin), Daniel Handler (Accordion, Keyboards), Dudley Klute (Vocals), Ida Pearle (Violin) und Shirley Simms (Vocals) beteiligt. Seit 2004 sind The Magnetic Fields beim Label Nonsuch Records unter Vertrag, zuletzt erschien dort 2020 das Album "Quickies" mit 28 kurzen Songs, der kürzeste "Death Pact Let's Make A)" ist 17 Sekunden lang und der längste "Come, Life, Shaker Life!" ist 2 Minuten 35 Sekunden kurz. Neben den Magnetic Fields ist Stephin Merritt seit Mitte der 90er Jahre auch noch mit den Bands The 6ths, The Gothic Archies und The Future Bible Heroes in der Popwelt unterwegs. The 6ths sind Stephin Merritt und Gastsänger*innen wie Momus, Bob Mould, Melanie, Gary Numan, Marc Almond, Odetta oder Miss Lily Banquette. Bei The Gothic Archies wird er meist von Daniel Handler und John Woo unterstützt und bei den Future Bible Heroes von Claudia Gonson und Chris Ewen, also Musiker*innen, die auch bei den Magnetic Fields mehr oder weniger mit dabei sind. Der Name The Magnetic Fields ist dem Buch "Les Chants Magnétiques" 1920 von André Breton und Philippe Soupault geschuldet. Stephin Merritt singt und spielt Gitarre, Ukulele, Banjo, Mandoline, Cello, Flöte, Akkordeon, Harmonium, Xylophon, Marxophon, das ist eine Art bundlose Zither, Synthesizer und vieles mehr, yeah. Und er schreibt fast alle Songs von The Magnetic Fields. Wow! Stephin Merritt: I write songs by sitting around in bars, so drinking songs are a little obvious. It's surprising that I don't write entirely drinking songs, since I am, in fact, drinking while writing the song. Drinking and love are the two principal sources of pleasure outside of music. There's only so many sources of pleasure, really. That's about it. Well, there are other arts as well. But none of them are as pleasurable as music, on a physical level. Das Album "69 Love Songs" darf eigentlich in keiner Popsammlung fehlen.
