Naked City war eine Avantgarde-Pop-Band, die von John Zorn 1988 in New York gegründet wurde. Das gleichnamige Debütalbum erschien 1990 bei Nonesuch Records in der Besetzung Yamataka Eye alias Tetsurō Yamatsuka (Vocals), Wayne Horvitz (Keyboards), Bill Frisell (Guitar), Fred Frith (Bass), Joey Baron (Drums) und John Zorn (Saxophone, Vocals). Guy Peters: John Zorns Naked City-project was about the most far out you could get, and Zorns exploration of what he 'could come up with given the limitations of the simple sax, guitar, keyboard, bass, drums-format' became the pinnacle of avant coolness. The result was a post-modern hybrid that cut up sequences as he saw fit and treated all genres equally: jazz, grindcore and country & western, were allowed to coexist, even in the same song. Guy Peters ist ein Musikjournalist und Musiker, er spielte u.a. in der Band Mr. Mama, die auch unter dem Namen Braddock veröffentlichte und aus den Musikern Guy Peters (Vocals), Roel Paulussen (Guitar), Danny Czekaj (Bass) und Patrick Remans (Drums) bestand. Wurden auf dem Debütalbum von Naked City neben eigenen Komposition auch Filmmusik von Ennio Morricone, Henry Mancini, Jerry Goldsmith oder John Barry sowie des Jazz-Musikers Ornette Coleman interpretiert, fanden auf dem dritten Album "Grand Guignol", das 1992 bei Avant Records erschien, auch klassische Komponisten wie Claude Debussy, Charles Ives, Alexander Scriabin oder Olivier Messiaen Platz in der Musik von Naked City. Im Jahr 1992 erschien auch das Album "Heretic - Jeux Des Dames Cruelles" bei Avant Records, das als Soundtrack für einen Film mit der us-amerikanischen Künstlerin Karen Finley in der Hauptrolle konzipiert war. Der Film wurde aber nie realisiert. Bis zur Auflösung 1993 veröffentlichten Naked City insgesamt 7 Alben, die 2005 bei Tzadik Records als 5-CD-Box "Naked City - The Complete Studio Recordings" wiederveröffentlicht wurden. Dieser Box liegt auch das Buch "Eight Million Stories - Naked City Ephemera" bei. Beim Album "Grand Guignol" wirkten als Gastsänger noch Bob Dorough und Mike Patton mit. Ebenfalls bei Tzadik Records erschien 2002 das Live-Album "Naked City Live, Vol.1 - The Knitting Factory 1989", bei diesem Auftritt fehlte Sänger Yamataka Eye. Guy Peters: Convoluted, tortuous, bizarre and demanding, Naked Citys music feels like a rollercoaster-ride in an amusement park for perverse minds that are fed-up with Disney, spoon-fed revisions of the same old and other prefab excursions in predictability. It was not only an outlet for Zorns outrage and frustration - he’s often said that the in-your-face-brutality of the band was a way of dealing with certain personal matters and venting anger - but also the postmodern ethic of genre-bending and cut’n’paste tactics taken to an extreme. It all wouldn't have been half as interesting if the band hadn't been such a gathering of jazz monsters. Ich habe mir für meine Sammlung die Alben "Naked City", "Grand Guignol" und "Heretic - Jeux Des Dames Cruelles" geleistet, die Tzadik-Box ist nicht gerade preisgünstig. Apropos Filmmusik und Ennio Morricone, John Zorn hat 1986 bei Nonesuch Records das hörenswerte Album "The Big Gundown" veröffentlicht, auf dem er ausschließlich Musik von Ennio Morricone interpretiert. Beim Song "Metamorfosi (La Classe Operaia Va In Paradiso)" ist Diamanda Galás als Sängerin zu hören. Auch dieses Album hat Platz in meiner Sammlung gefunden, es steht aber bei Ennio Morricone in der Abteilung Filmmusik und nicht bei John Zorn. Ja, Ordnung ist eine sehr komplexe Angelegenheit. Zuletzt erschienen von John Zorn 2022 bei Tzadik Records die Alben "Song Of Songs", "Spinoza", "Suite For Piano" und "Perchance To Dream". Mit Spinoza ist der niederländische Philosoph Baruch de Spinoza gemeint, der von 1632 bis 1677 lebte. Dieser schrieb Werke wie "Abhandlung über die Verbesserung des Verstandes" oder "Ethik, nach geometrischer Methode dargestellt". Ich habe sie nicht gelesen, aber vielleicht hole ich das irgendwann mal nach, oder auch nicht. Good night.
