Die Indie-Rock-Band Placebo wurde 1994 von Brian Molko (Vocals, Guitar) und Stefan Olsdal (Bass, Guitar) in London, England gegründet. Erster Drummer wurde bald darauf Robert Schultzberg. Das Debütalbum "Placebo" erschien 1996 bei Virgin Records und schaffte es auf Platz 5 der britischen Charts. Auch mit dem Song "Nancy Boy" schafften es Placebo in die Top Ten. Robert Schultzberg verließ die Band 1997 wieder und neuer Drummer wurde Steve Hewitt, der davor bei der Band Boo Radleys getrommelt hat. Brian Molko: We were reacting very strongly against the machismo, terrace chants and revisionism of Britpop, and the nationalism that we interpreted as xenophobia of the musical kind. We were trying to make a strong political statement about the fluidity of sexuality with the dresses and make-up that we wore. We set out to confuse, and I guess "Nancy Boy" was the perfect soundtrack to that. Steve Hewitt trommelte auf den Alben "Without You I'm Nothing" 1998, "Black Market Music" 2000, "Sleeping With Ghosts" 2003 und "Meds" 2006, dann verabschiedete er sich und gründete seine eigene Band Love Amongst Ruin. Neuer Drummer bei Placebo wurde Steve Forrest. Weitere Hits in Großbritannien hatten Placebo mit den Songs "Pure Morning" 1998, "Every You Every Me" 1999, "Slave To The Wage" 2000, "The Bitter End" 2003, "Twenty Years" 2004 und "Because I Want You" 2006, in den USA schafften sie es mit den Song "Running Up That Hill" 2007 in die Charts. Mit Steve Forrest als Drummer veröffentlichten Placebo die Alben "Battle For The Sun" 2009 und "Loud Like Love" 2013, er verließ die Band 2015 und wurde Sänger der Bluesrockband Planes. In der Besetzung Brian Molko, Stefan Olsdal, Nick Gavrilovic (Guitar, Piano), Bill Lloyd (Piano, Bass, Accordina), Matt Lunn (Drums, Percussion) und Fiona Brice (Violin, Piano, Glockenspiel, Backing Vocals) performte Placebo 2015 in London ein MTV Unplugged Konzert, das für das Album "Placebo MTV Unplugged" 2015 mitgeschnitten wurde. Im Jahr 2016 erschienen die EP "Life's What You Make It" und die Single "Jesus' Son / Life's What You Make It" beim Label Elevator Lady. Brian Molko: I'm tired of being around men all the time. I'm going to start a band called Skirt with three girls and I'll play the guitar and sing backing vocals in drag. I went window shopping when I was in New York, saw a lot of amazing dresses. Diese Ankündigung setzte Brian Molko nicht in die Tat um. Das bisher letzte Album von Placebo, "Never Let Me Go", erschien 2022 beim Label Elevator Lady. Die Band besteht jetzt offiziell nur mehr aus Brian Molko, Stefan Olsdal und wechselnden Gastmusiker*innen. Stefan Olsdal: Placebo are showmen! Like Abba!
