Rites Of Spring wurde 1984 von Guy Picciotto (Vocals, Guitar), Eddie Janney (Guitar), Mike Fellows (Bass) und Brendon Canty (Drums) gegründet und war bis 1986 aktiv. In dieser kurzen Zeit veröffentlichte die Band das Album "Rites Of Spring" 1985 und die EP "All Through A Life", die erst 1987, also bereits nach dem Ende der Band erschien. Beide Tonträger kamen bei Dischord Records heraus und wurden von Ian MacKaye, dem Gründer von Dischord Records und Sänger der Band Minor Threat produziert. Nach dem Ende von Rites Of Spring machten die 4 Musiker gemeinsam unter dem Namen Happy Go Licky weiter und veröffentlichten 1988 bei Peterbilt Records das Album "Happy Go Licky", yeah. Danach gründeten Guy Picciotto und Brendon Canty mit Ian MacKaye (Vocals, Guitar) und Joe Lally (Bass) die Band Fugazi. Im Jahr 1987 erschien bei Dischord Records die Compilation "End On End" von Rites Of Spring, sie wurde 2002 neu aufgelegt, darauf ist auch der Song "Drink Deep" zu finden. Ian MacKaye: Basically we just created our own label, but again we just did it to document our own music and create our own thing, so the major labels were just always out of our picture, we're not interested. Dischord Records startete 1980 mit der "Minor Disturbance E.P." von der Band The Teen Idles, das waren Nathan Strejcek (Vocals), Geordie Grindle (Guitar), Ian MacKaye (Bass) und Jeff Nelson (Drums). Ian MacKaye war auch noch bei den Dischord-Bands Egg Hunt, Embrace, Skewbald und Fugazi als Musiker mit dabei. Wow. Heute ist er mit der Band Coriky unterwegs, die 2020 bei Dischord Records ein gleichnamiges Album veröffentliche. Coriky sind Ian MacKaye (Guitar, Vocals), Joe Lally (Bass, Vocals) und Amy Farina (Drums, Vocals). Dischord Records wird von Jeff Nelson und Ian MacKaye betrieben. Jeff Nelson war mit den Dischord-Bands The Teen Idles, Minor Threat, Egg Hunt, Three, The High-Back Chairs, Skewbald und Fast Piece Of Funiture in der Popwelt unterwegs. Sehr empfehlenswert ist die DoppelCD "20 Years Of Dischord 1980-2000", die 2002 bei Dischord Records erschienen ist. Darauf sind Songs von den Bands The Teen Idles, Untouchables, State Of Alert, Minor Threat, Void, Youth Brigade, Government Issue, Scream, Iron Cross, Red C, Deadline, Artificial Peace, Faith, Skewbald, Marginal Man, Gray Matter, Rites Of Spring, Beefeater, The Snakes, Dag Nasty, Embrace, Soulside, Egg Hunt, One Last Wish, Fire Party, Ignition, Three, Shudder To Think, Happy Go Licky, Fugazi, Lungfish, Fidelity Jones, The Nation Of Ulysses, Holy Rollers, Jawbox, Severin, The High-Back Chairs, Autoclave, Circus Lupus, Branch Manager, Slant 6, Hoover, Trusty, Smart Went Crazy, The Crownhate Ruin, The Warmers, The Make-Up, Bluetip, Faraquet, Q And Not U und Rozzlyn Rangers zu finden. Tolle Sache. Die kürzesten Songs darauf sind "I Object" von Youth Brigade mit 29 Sekunden, "Draw Blank" von State Of Alert mit 39 Sekunden, "No Revolution" von Deadline mit 49 Sekunden und "Snubbing" von Government Issue mit 59 Sekunden. Hardcore-Punk war in seinen Anfangstagen kurz und bündig, später durfte es dann auch etwas länger dauern bis der Song ein Ende fand. Yeah!
