Die Band Sixteen Horsepower wurde 1992 von David Eugene Edwards (Vocals, Guitar, Lap Steel Guitar, Banjo, Hurdy-Gurdy, Concertina, Bandoneon, Piano), Pascal Humbert (Bass, Guitar, Vocals) und Jean-Yves Tola (Drums, Percussion, Piano, Vocals) in Los Angeles, Kalifornien gegründet. Das Debütalbum "Sackcloth 'n' Ashes" erschien 1995 bei A&M Records in der Besetzung David Eugene Edwards, Jean-Yves Tola und Keven Soll (Bass, Cello, Vocals), an der Fiddle half auch noch Gordon Gano von den Violent Femmes bei den Aufnahmen mit. Pascal Humbert hat wohl irgendwie keine Zeit gehabt, aber beim zweiten Album "Low Estate" 1997 ist er wieder mit dabei. Produziert wurde "Low Estate" von John Parish, der auf dem Album auch Percussion, Organ, Guitar und Xylophone spielt. Als Gastmusiker ist an diesem Album noch Jeffrey-Paul Norlander (Fiddle, Cello, Organ, Backing Vocals) beteiligt, der auch beim Songwriting mitwirkte. Nach "Low Estate" wechselten Sixteen Horsepower zu Glitterhouse Records, wo die Alben "Secret South" 2000 und "Folklore" 2002 erschienen. Bei "Secret South" ist Steve Taylor (Guitar, Organ, Backing Vocals) neu dabei und bei "Folklore" sind Sixteen Horsepower wieder ein Trio, wie in ihren Anfängen. Sixteen Horsepower lösten sich schließlich 2005 auf. Bereits 2001 hatte David Eugene Edwards mit Stephen Taylor (Guitar) und Daniel McMahon (Piano, Organ, Vocals) die Band Woven Hand, des öfteren auch Wovenhand geschrieben, gegründet, die immer mehr zu seiner Hauptband wurde. Nach dem Ende von Sixteen Horsepower wurde auch Pascal Humbert Mitglied bei Woven Hand. Von Woven Hand erschien zuletzt 2022 bei Glitterhouse Records das Album "Silver Sash". Wie es bei Jean-Yves Tola danach weiterging, weiß ich nicht. Vor Sixteen Horsepower spielten Pascal Humbert und Jean-Yves Tola jedenfalls gemeinsam in der Band Passion Fodder, die von 1985 bis 1991 bei Barclay Records 5 Alben veröffentlichten. Passion Fodder waren Theo Hakola (Vocals, Guitar, Piano, Organ, Harmonica, Dulcimer), Lionel Dollet (Guitar), Bénédicte Villain (Violin), Pascal Humbert (Bass, Spoons) und Jean-Yves Tola (Drums). Der Song "I Seen What I Saw" ist auf dem Album "Sackcloth 'n' Ashes" 1995 zu finden, uups, 1995, nicht 1996 - naja, in Europa kam das Album erst 1996 auf den Markt, also stimmt 1996 schon irgendwie. David Eugene Edwards: Well, at first the band were simply called Horsepower, but a lot of people thought that was something to do with heroin. That really pissed me off, so I decided to put something in front of it to distract them. I got '16' from a traditional American folk song, where a man is singing about his dead wife and 16 black horses are pulling her casket up to the cemetery. I liked the image of 16 working horses. Okay, Sixteen Horsepower, waren jedenfalls eine tolle Band. Bei Glitterhouse Records ist 2019 das Box-Set "All Access" von Sixteen Horsepower erschienen, darauf ist eine Live-Version des Songs "I Seen What I Saw" aus dem Jahr 2001 zu finden und außerdem ein paar schöne Coverversionen, wie "Nobody 'Cept You" von Bob Dylan, "Alone And Forsaken" von Hank Williams oder "24 Hours" von Joy Division. Yeah!
