Die Band Sleepytime Gorilla Museum wurde 1999 von Nils Frykdahl (Vocals, Guitar, Flute), Dan Rathbun (Bass, Slide-Piano Log, Trombone, Lute, Vocals) und Carla Kihlstedt (Violin, Percussion, Guitar, Autoharp, Organ, Vocals) in Oakland, Kalifornien gegründet und war bis 2011 in der Popwelt unterwegs. Nils Frykdahl und Dan Rathbun spielten davor bereits gemeinsam in den Bands Idiot Flesh und Charming Hostess, wo auch Carla Kihlstedt mit dabei war. Mit Moe Staiano (Percussion, Glockenspiel) und David Shamrock (Drums) war die Band dann komplett und 2001 erschien bei Seeland Records, dem Label der Band Negativland, das Debütalbum "Grand Opening And Closing". Nach diesem Album verließ David Shamrock die Band und Frank Grau (Drums, Melodica) und Matthias Bossi (Drums, Glockenspiel, Xylophone, Vocals) kamen neu dazu. Das zweite Album "Of Natural History" erschien 2004 beim Label Web Of Mimicry und das dritte und letzte Album "In Glorious Times" 2007 bei The End Records. Bei der Auflösung bestand die Band aus Nils Frykdahl, Dan Rathbun, Carla Kihlstedt, Matthias Bossi und Michael Mellender (Percussion, Guitar, Trumpet, Xylophone, Toy Piano, Tangularium). Nils Frykdahl, Dan Rathbun, David Shamrock und Michael Mellender machten danach gemeinsam unter dem neuen Namen Free Salamander Exhibit weiter. Keine Ahnung ob Free Salamander Exhibit noch aktiv sind, Nils Frykdahl ist mit Dawn McCarthy (Vocals, Guitar, Drums, Percussion) auch unter dem Namen Faun Fables in der Popwelt unterwegs, zuletzt erschien von ihnen 2025 bei Drag City Records das Album "Counterclockwise". Carla Kihlstedt und Matthias Bossi gründeten das Duo Rabbit Rabbit und das Label Rabbit Rabbit Records, zuletzt erschien von Rabbit Rabbit 2022 das Album "Rabbit Rabbit Radio, Volume 5 - Love Is Code". Carla Kihlstedt hat 2025 beim Label Cantaloupe Music mit der Band Present Music auch das Album "26 Little Deaths" veröffentlicht. Moe Staiano scheint zur Zeit mit der Sängerin Karen Cravotto unter dem Namen oFFice chAIrs Musik zu machen, von ihnen erschien 2024 beim Label Surplus Industries die EP "Cross Passages". Yeah! Nur was Frank Grau aktuell so treibt, konnte ich leider nicht herausfinden.
