Industrial Music aus Great Britain, yeah. Die Band Test Dept. wurde 1981 von Graham Cunnington (Percussion, Electronics, Vocals), Paul Jamrozy (Percussion, Electronics, Vocals), Toby Burdon (Timpani, Vocals), Paul Hines (Tapes) und Angus Farquhar (Drums) in New Cross gegründet. Nach den beiden von der Band selbst herausgegebenen Kassetten "History (The Strength Of Metal In Motion)" 1982 und "Strength Of Metal In Motion" 1983 unterschrieben Test Dept. bei Some Bizarre Records, wo 1983 die EP "Compulsion" und 1984 das Album "Beating The Retreat" erschienen. Bei Konzerten der Band gab es auch immer slides and films, für die Brett Turnbull zuständig war. Im Jahr 1985 erschien das Album "Shoulder To Shoulder", eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem South Wales Striking Miners’ Choir. Die Band war inzwischen beim Label Ministry Of Power unter Vertrag. Das Album "The Unacceptable Face Of Freedom" erschien zwar bereits 1986, doch erst auf der 87er CD-Ausgabe sind die 3 Songs "The Unacceptable Face Of Freedom - Face 1", "Face 2" und "Face 3" mit drauf. Diese CD wurde 2007 von Some Bizarre Records wiederveröffentlicht. Die letzten Test-Dept.-Tonträger bei Ministry Of Power waren das Album "Proven In Action" 1991 und die Single "Bang On It! (T*A*O* Systems Mix) / Bang On It! (T.C. Ruff House Remix)" 1993. Danach kam die Band beim belgischen Label KK Records unter. Dort erschienen noch die beiden Alben "Totality" 1995 und "Tactics For Evolution" 1998. Test Dept. lösten sich Ende 1997 auf, also vor Erscheinen des letzten Albums. Graham Cunnington wirkte auch beim einzigen Album "The Greatest Show Of Truth" der Band The Sacred Sawdust Ring mit, das 1994 beim Label Sawdust Communications erschien. Paul Jamrozy machte später unter dem Pseudonym Wounded Knee Musik. Im Jahr 2011 veröffentlichte er gemeinsam mit Roz Corrigan unter dem Bandnamen C.3.3. das Album "Ballad Of Reading Goal - The Cacophonietta" beim Label Satellitic Productions. Unter dem Namen Test Dept. Redux spielte die Band 2016 ein paar Konzerte und kündigte für 2017 ein neues Album an, das dann aber erst 2019 bei One Little Indian Records erschien, "Disturbance", die Band nannte sich nun wieder Test Dept, nur der Punkt am Schluss des Namens war verschwunden. Von den Gründungsmitgliedern sind noch Graham Cunnington und Paul Jamrozy mit dabei, die auf diesem Album von Lottie Lou (Electronics), Ashley Davies (Bass, Percussion), Zel Kaute (Drums), Rob Lewis (Drums) und den beiden Sänger*innen Ilenia Bombardi und Jordi Blanchar musikalisch unterstützt werden. Richard Cook schrieb 1984 im New Musical Express über Test Dept.: The work of Test Dept. - and this is work, for sure, not playing - is inextricably cabled to a rhetoric of 'action'. Graham Cunnington: We were interested in creating something new, not assimilating into the rock thing like punk had done. We wanted to do something with that feel of punk but was actually making a new type of music. Punk had been an inspiration for us - bands like the Sex Pistols, Television then the Ruts all showing there were possibilities with that kind of music. Angus Farquhar: In a lot of ways it was the dub aspect of reggae that became far more than a token thing for us with its more experimental playing around with the sound that was big for us. The assimilation of punk spoiled and it just seemed to become very nihilistic at times. We wanted to take that anger that we felt as young men in a difficult environment and construct something far more constructive for ourselves. Test Dept. oder Test Dept sind eine tolle Band, werden sehen wie es und ob es weitergeht. So, und jetzt hört euch auch gleich den Song "I Am Not Artist" 1979 von Smegma an, er ist auf ihrem Debütalbum "Glamour Girl 1941" zu finden, das 1979 bei der Los Angeles Free Music Society erschienen ist. Experimental Noise Pop, yeah. Smegma wurden 1973 in Pasadena, Kalifornien gegründet und beim Album "Glamour Girl 1941" waren die Musiker*innen D.K. alias Bradford Hostetler (Vocals, Bass, Guitar), Hair Cess Poole alias Harry C. Poole (Vocals, Bass), Dr. Id alias Mike Lastra (Effects, Synthesizer, Tape, Vocals), Cheez-it-Ritz alias Allen Loyd (Organ, Vocals), Ju Suk Reet Meate alias Eric Stewart (Bass, Guitar, Tape, Vocals), Amazon Bambi alias Amy DeWolfe (Drums, Keyboards, Toys), Danton Dodge (Drums, Vocals) und Frank Chavez (Saxophone, Trumpet) mit dabei. Smegma sind noch immer fleißig in der Popwelt unterwegs, von den inzwischen alten Musiker*innen sind noch D.K., der sich jetzt Chucko Fatts nennt, Cheez-it-Ritz, Ju Suk Reet Meate und Amazon Bambi mit dabei. Ju Suk Reet Meate: You can ask yourself: shouldn't you learn your profession and then perform? We think not. Performing music is a laboratorium, it's a big experiment and we're gonna perform anyway. Of course there are reasons why you shouldn't do it, but that's the silliness of youth, not thinking there's a barrier there. You'll find in many other areas of life that it's very foolish to be that way. But why not in music? Nobody gets hurt. So, in art, you can be very brave.
