Nick Cave hatten wir schon mal mit der Band The Birthday Party, nun ein Song mit seinen Bad Seeds. "Black Betty" ist ein alter Song, meist wird er als Traditional geführt, manchmal wird die Autorenschaft aber auch dem Bluesmusiker Leadbelly alias Huddie Ledbetter zugeschrieben. Robert Vells: As late as the 1960s, the vehicle that carried men to prison was known as 'Black Betty', though the same name may have also been used for the whip that so often was laid on the prisoners' backs, 'bam-ba-lam'. Lead Belly nahm den Song 1939 für das Label Musicraft auf. Zum Hit wurde der Song aber erst 1977 in der Version der New Yorker Hardrock-Band Ram Jam. Die Version der Bad Seeds wurde kein Hit, ist aber genauso toll. Die Band Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds wurde 1983 von Nick Cave gegründet und bestand anfänglich aus Nick Cave (Vocals, Piano, Organ, Harmonica), Blixa Bargeld alias Christian Emmerich (Guitar, Backing Vocals), Barry Adamson (Bass, Guitar, Backing Vocals) und Mick Harvey (Drums, Piano, Organ, Backing Vocals). Mick Harvey war auch bereits bei der Band The Birthday Party an Nick Caves Seite. Die Band bekam einen Vertrag bei Mute Records und 1984 erschien das Debütalbum "From Her To Eternity", bei dem auch noch Anita Lane (Vocals, Keyboards), Hugo Race (Guitar, Backing Vocals) und Jim Thirlwell (Bass, Guitar) mithalfen. Auf diesem Album befindet sich eine tolle Version des Songs "Avalanche" von Leonard Cohen. In den 80er Jahren erschienen bei Mute Records von Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds noch die Alben "The Firstborn Is Dead" 1985, "Kicking Against The Pricks" 1986, "Your Funeral... My Trial" 1986 und "Tender Pray" 1989. "Kicking Against The Pricks" ist eine collection of cover versions, darauf finden sich Versionen von bekannten Songs wie "Hey Joe", "All Tomorrow's Parties", "By The Time I Get To Phoenix", "The Hammer Song" oder "The Carnial Is Over". Im Jahr 1985 war Tom Wydler (Drums, Percussion, Backing Vocals) neu zu den Bad Seeds gekommen und 1986 verabschiedete sich Barry Adamson, der 1989 sein erstes Soloalbum "Moss Side Story" veröffentlichte. Ende der 80er Jahre gehörte auch King Congo Powers alias Brian Tristan (Guitar, Backing Vocals) zu den Bad Seeds. In den 90er Jahren erschienen bei Mute Records die Alben "The Good Son" 1990, "Henry's Dream" 1992, "Let Love In" 1994, "Murder Ballads" 1996 und "The Boatman's Call" 1997. Auf "Murder Ballads" ist der einzige Hit von Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds zu finden, "Where The Wild Roses Grow" mit Gastsängerin Kylie Minogue. Wichtigste Neuzugänge in den 90ern waren Conway Savage (Piano, Organ, Backing Vocals), Jim Sclavunus (Percussions, Drums, Backing Vocals) und Warren Ellis (Violin, Viola, Mandolin, Bouzouki, Guitar, Lute, Flute, Piano, Synthesizer, Loops, Backing Vocals). Blixa Bargeld verließ die Band 2003 und Mick Harvey ging 2009. Weitere 3 Alben erschienen seither beim Label Bad Seed Ltd., das Nick Cave 2012 gegründet hat, "Push The Sky Away" 2013, "Skeleton Tree" 2016 und "Ghosteen" 2019. Die Band besteht aktuell aus Nick Cave, Thomas Wydler, Jim Sclavunos, Warren Ellis, George Vjestica (Guitar, Vocals) und Martyn Casey (Bass). Der Song "Black Betty" befindet sich auf der 3-CD-Box "B-Sides & Rarities", die ich sehr liebe. Nick Cave: Inspiration is a word used by people who aren't really doing anything. Okay, die meiste Zeit mag ich Nick Cave irgendwie und manchmal geht mir seine Art etwas auf die Nerven, aber er ist eindeutig ein Guter. Yeah! Nick Cave: The band is a living, breathing thing. It grows in the same way we do as human beings and if it doesn't, it dies. It's important to feed the organism, and one way of doing that is to set musical challenges that keep it alive.
