Im Jahr 1988 veröffentlichte die Zeitschrift New Musical Express das Album "Sgt. Pepper Knew My Father", auf dem das gesamte Beatles-Album "Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band" 1967 neu interpretiert wird. Yeah! Mit dabei sind The Three Wize Men, Wet Wet Wet, The Christians, The Wedding Present feat. Amelia Fletcher, Hue & Cry, Billy Bragg & Cara Tivey, Frank Sidebottom, Sonic Youth, The Courtney Pine Quartet, Michelle Shocked, The Triffids und The Fall. The Three Wize Men beginnen mit dem Song "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" und spielen auch die Reprise des Songs bevor The Fall mit "A Day In The Life" dieses Tributealbum an die Beatles abschließen. Wer das Beatles-Album kennt, weiß jetzt auch wer welchen Beatles-Song zum Besten gibt. The Fall waren 1988 Mark E. Smith (Vocals), Marcia Schofield (Keyboards), Brix Smith (Guitar, Vocals), Craig Scanlon (Guitar), Steve Hanley (Bass) und Simon Wolstencroft (Drums). Ja, und Simon Rogers (Guitar, Saxophone, Synthesizer) war Ende der 80er Jahre auch kurze Zeit Mitglied von The Fall, ob er bei der Aufnahme von "A Day In The Life" mit dabei war, weiß ich nicht. Egal. The Fall als Punk zu bezeichnen greift zwar etwas zu kurz, aber irgendwie ist es auch goldrichtig. Mark E. Smith: I used to be psychic, but I drank my way out of it. Der Song "A Day In The Life" ist auch auf der 1993 beim Label Castle Communication erschienenen Fall-Compilation "The Collection" enthalten. Eigentlich kann man nie genug The Fall in seiner Popsammlung haben. Neben seiner Arbeit mit The Fall hat Mark E. Smith auch die beiden Soloalben "The Post Nearly Man" 1998 und "Pander Panda Panzer" 2002 veröffentlicht. Weiters gibt es ein Album von der Band Von Südenfed, das waren Mark E. Smith, Andi Toma und Jan St. Werner, die beiden sind seit 1993 als Mouse On Mars in der Popwelt unterwegs. Mit Ed Blaney hat Mark E. Smith die Alben "Smith And Blaney" 2008, "The Train Part Three" 2009, "Urban Nature" 2016 und "The Train Part Four" 2019 veröffentlicht und dann gibts noch Singles von ihm mit den Inspiral Carpets, D.O.S.E., Inch und Mildmanjan. So, jetzt ein kurzer Ausschnitt aus einem Interview, das Mark E. Smith 2007 mit Max Dax für Welt Online führte: Max Dax: Sie gelten als unnahbar, als zynisch und gemein. Mark E. Smith: Ich kenne diese Vorwürfe. Die Leute behaupten sogar, ich sei selbstzerstörerisch - nur weil ich gern trinke. Tatsächlich möchte ich lediglich nicht Bohemien sein, ich möchte auch nicht Popstar sein, und ich möchte nicht sesshaft werden. Mark E. Smith starb 2018 im Alter von 60 Jahren an Krebs.
