Die Band The Pogues wurde 1982 von Shane McGowan (Vocals), Peter 'Spider' Stacy (Tin Whistle), Jem Finer (Banjo) und James Fearnley (Accordion) als Pogue Mahone in London, England gegründet. Pogue Mahone heißt soviel wie Leck mich am Arsch! Die Rhythmusgruppe, bestehend aus Cait O’Riordan (Bass) und Andrew Ranken (Drums), kam 1983 dazu und bald darauf nannte sich die Band in The Pogues um. Im Jahr 1984 veröffentlichte die Band in Eigenregie die Single "Dark Streets Of London / And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda", die zwar nicht sehr erfolgreich war, aber der Band einen Plattenvertrag bei Stiff Records einbrachte, wo im gleichen Jahr noch das Debütalbum "Red Roses For Me" erschien. Die Musikzeitschrift Sounds schrieb über das Album: "Red Roses For Me" is a satisfyingly impure, purposefully imperfect and totally irresistible collection of lasting resentment, rebellious roars, watery-eyed romance and uproarious jigs. Surprisingly, this record works. It manages to convey the sullied, brazen and raucous spirit of their live set very effectively. Bei Stiff Records erschien 1985 noch das zweite Album "Rum Sodomy & The Lash". Neu dazu gekommen war Philip Chevron (Guitar, Mandolin). Den größten Hit hatten die Pogues 1987 mit dem Song "Fairytale Of New York", bei dem Kirsty MacColl als Gastsängerin mit dabei ist. In Irland schaffte es die Band auch mit den Songs "Haunted" 1986, "The Irish Rover" 1987, "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" 1988, "Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah" 1989, "Misty Morning, Albert Bridge" 1989 und "Jack’s Heroes" 1990 in die Top Ten. Bei "The Irish Rover" und "Jack's Heroes" werden die Pogues von den alten Herren der Band The Dubliners musikalisch unterstützt. Cait O’Riordan verließ die Pogues 1986 und Darryl Hunt wurde der neue Bassist, außerdem kam 1986 Terry Woods (Mandolin, Cittern, Concertina, Guitar) neu dazu. Nach dem Album "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" 1988 beim Label Warner Music Group unterschrieben The Pogues bei Island Records, wo die Alben "Peace And Love" 1989 und "Hell’s Ditch" 1990 erschienen. Sänger Shane McGowan wurde wegen seiner Alkoholsucht immer unzuverlässiger und 1991 von der Band gefeuert. Joe Strummer von The Clash wurde der neue Sänger, doch die Fans der Pogues wollten ihn nicht so recht und Peter 'Spider' Stacy übernahm die Rolle des Sängers. Nach den Alben "Waiting For Herb" 1993 und "Pogue Mahone" 1996 lösten sich die Pogues auf. Shane McGowan gründete nach seinem Rauswurf die Band Shane McGowan & The Popes, die 1994 ihr Debütalbum "The Snake" bei ZTT Records veröffentlichte. Im Jahr 2001 versuchten es die Pogues in der Besetzung Shane McGowan, Peter 'Spider' Stacy, Jem Finer, James Fearnley, Andrew Ranken, Philip Chevron, Darryl Hunt und Terry Woods ein zweites Mal. Philip Chevron starb 2013 im Alter von 56 Jahren an Speiseröhrenkrebs und 2014 lösten sich die Pogues endgültig auf. Sänger Shane McGowan ist aktuell mit Shane McGowan & The Shane Gang in der Popwelt unterwegs. Es gab in den 60er Jahren eine britische Beatband namens Shane & The Shane Gang, deren Sänger hieß Tony Shane. Unter den Namen Shane & The Shane Gang veröffentlichte die Band 1964 bei Pye Records die Single "Whistle Stop / Who Wrote That Song", danach gabs noch 2 Singles bei Decca Records, die erschienen aber unter The Shane Gang. Yeah! Shane McGowan: I went back with Pogues and we grew to hate each other all over again. I don't hate the band at all - they're friends. I like them a lot. We were friends for years before we joined the band. We just got a bit sick of each other. We're friends as long as we don't tour together. I've done a hell of a lot of touring. I've had enough of it. Der Song "Dark Streets Of London" ist auf dem Album "Red Roses For Me" 1984 zu finden, das 2015 bei Rhino Records als CD wiederveröffentlicht wurde. Ich habe von den Pogues die Alben "Red Roses For Me", "Rum, Sodomy & The Lash", "If I Should Fall From Grace With God", "Peace And Love" und "Hell’s Ditch" in meine Sammlung aufgenommen, also alle Alben mit Shane McGowan als Sänger.
