Avantgarde-Pop, yeah. Der Song "Hit The Road Jack" wurde 1960 von Percy Mayfield geschrieben und war 1961 ein Hit für Ray Charles. The Residents wurden 1969 in San Francisco, Kalifornien gegründet und das erste Konzert der Band fand angeblich 1971 statt. Die Mitglieder der Band blieben anonym und traten von Anfang an in Verkleidung auf. Die berühmte Augapfelmaske wurde zum Markenzeichen der Residents, obwohl auch zahlreiche andere Verkleidungen und Masken zum Einsatz kamen. Im Jahr 1972 gründete die Band dann ihr eigenes Label Ralph Records und 1974 erschien das Debütalbum "Meet The Residents". Das Cover des Albums ist eine Persiflage des Covers von "With The Beatles" 1963, dem zweiten Studioalbum der Beatles. Mit dem zweiten Album "The Third Reich’n’Roll" 1976 wurden die Residents zur Kultband. Das Cover zeigt den us-amerikanischen Fernsehmoderator Dick Clark in Naziuniform mit Karotte in der Hand. Dick Clark wurde durch die Fernsehshow "American Bandstand" berühmt, die er von 1956 bis 1989 moderierte. Dick Clark: I played records, the kids danced and America watched. Das Album besteht aus den beiden Longtracks "Swastikas On Parade" und "Hitler Was A Vegetarian", die beide eine Collage aus bekannten Songs der 60er Jahre sind. Hits wie "Hanky Panky", "Sunshine Of Your Love", "Light My Fire", "Yummy Yummy Yummy", "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", "Sympathy For The Devil" oder "Land Of Thousand Dances" tauchen auf und wieder unter. Yeah! Und Dick Clark ist der große Hitmacher, der den Daumen nach oben oder unten dreht. Hank Ballard: The man was big. He was the biggest thing in America at that time. He was bigger than the president! "The Third Reich'n'Roll" ist ein tolles Album und sollte eigentlich in keiner Popsammlung fehlen. Ab 1976 gabs dann auch die so genannte Cryptic Corporation, die als Management und Sprecher der Residents fungierte und aus Homer Flynn, Hardy Fox, Jay Clem und John Kennedy bestand. Dass sie auch unter der Maske der 4 Residents stecken, bestritt die Crypric Corporation konsequent. Viele Musikjournalist*innen gehen aber davon aus, das Homer Flynn als Sänger und Hardy Fox als Komponist die Köpfe hinter den Residents sind. Als Musiker maßgeblich beteiligt war der 1987 verstorbene Snakefinger alias Philip Lithman, der aber stets als guest artist und nicht als Mitglied der Residents angeführt wurde. Die Residents haben seither eine Unzahl von Studio- und Livealben, Soundtracks, Videos, DVDs, CD-ROMs etcetera veröffentlicht, zuletzt erschien 2021 das Album "Leftovers Again?!". Ich habe in meiner Popsammlung die Alben "Meet The Residents" 1974, "The Third Reich’n’Roll" 1976, "Fingerprince" 1977, "Duck Stab / Buster & Glen" 1978, "Eskimo" 1979, "Commercial Album" 1980, "Stars & Hank Forever!" 1986, "The King & Eye" 1989, "Gingerbread Man" 1994, "Wormwood (Curious Stories From The Bible)" 1998, "Demons Dance Alone" 2002 und "Animal Lover" 2005 sowie das 1996 bei Vaccination Records erschienene Tribute-Album "Eyesore - A Stab At The Residents", auf dem Bands wie Idiot Flesh, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, Giant Ant Farm, Charming Hostess oder Heavy Vegetable Songs von den Residents interpretieren. Sehr toll! Der Song "Hit The Road Jack"erschien 1987 bei Ralph Records als Single, mit dem Song "Excerpt From 'For Elsie'" auf der B-Side, er ist aber auch als Bonustrack auf der CD-Ausgabe des "Commercial Album" 1988 vom Label East Side Digital mit drauf. Auch die Originalversion von Ray Charles ist sehr hörenswert. Ray Charles starb 2004 im Alter von 73 Jahren. Hardy Fox von den Residents starb 2018 ebenfalls im Alter von 73 Jahren. Er hat auch einige Soloalben veröffentlicht, sowohl unter seinem richtigen Namen Hardy Fox als auch unter dem Pseudonym Charles Bobuck. Hardy Fox: I suppose that with age comes an awareness of how the world works and that there is a great deal of struggle and sadness in life. And also, age brings an increased awareness of death. When you're young, you don't really think about it, even though the risk is just as great. As you get older, you slowly begin to realize that death isn't just something that happens to other people. So there's a certain sadness in coming to terms with that. And accepting it.
