"You Think You’re A Man" wurde von Geoff Deane geschrieben und war 1984 ein Hit für Divine alias Harris Glenn Milstead. Geoff Deane war Sänger der Band Modern Romance, die mit Songs wie "Everybody Salsa" 1981, "Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White" 1982 oder "Don’t Stop That Crazy Rhythm" 1983 in Great Britain einige Hits hatten. Modern Romance waren Geoff Deane (Vocals), Robby Jaymes (Keyboards), Paul Gendler (Guitar), David Jaymes (Bass), Tony Gainsborough (Drums) und John Du Prez alias Trevor Jones (Trumpet). Modern Romance lösten sich 1985 auf. The Vaselines wurden 1986 von Frances McKee (Vocals, Guitar) und Eugene Kelly (Vocals, Guitar) in Glasgow, Schottland gegründet. Die Band unterschrieb bei 53rd & 3rd Records und 1987 erschien die erste Single "Son Of A Gun / Rory Rides Me Row / You Think You’re A Man". Bei den Aufnahmen wurde das Duo, wie auch bei der zweiten Single "Dying For It / Molly’s Lips" und dem Debütalbum "Dum-Dum" 1989 von James Seenan (Bass) und Charles Kelly (Drums) unterstützt. Doch 1990 lösten sich die Vaselines bereits wieder auf. Eugene Kelly gründete die Band Captain America die bei Paperhouse Records die EPs "Captain America" 1991 und "Flame On" 1992 veröffentlichte, dann meldete sich die Firma Marvel Comics zu Wort und verbot der Band den Gebrauch ihres Superhelden als Bandnamen. Die beiden Alben "Oomalama" 1992 und "Mary Queen Of Scots" erschienen dann unter dem neuen Namen Eugenius. Captain America bzw. Eugenius waren Eugene Kelly (Vocals, Guitar), Gordon Keen (Guitar), Cassell Webb (Keyboards, Backing Vocals), Raymond Boyle (Bass) und Roy Lawrence (Drums). Frances McKee und James Sheenan machten gemeinsam unter dem Namen Painkillers weiter und veröffentlichten die beiden Singles "Tropical Zodiac / Five Signs / Doin' The Same" 1994 und "Lost In Space / Saint Twelve / U.F.O." 1996. Im Jahr 1997 trennten sich die Painkillers und Frances McKee (Vocals, Guitar) gründete mit Marie McKee (Vocals, Percussion, Melodica), Brian McEwan (Guitar, Glockenspiel), Elanor Taylor (Flute, Keyboards, Melodica), Vicky Morton (Bass) und Kenny McEwan (Drums) die Band Suckle, die beim Label Chemical Underground 2000 das Album "Against Nurture" veröffentlichte. Eugene Kelly veröffentlichte 2003 bei P-Vine Records das Soloalbum "Man Alive" und Frances McKee 2004, ebenfalls bei P-Vine Records, das Soloalbum "Sunny Moon". Ja, und dann machten die beiden wieder gemeinsame Sache und 2010 erschien bei Sub Pop Records das zweite Vaselines-Album "Sex With An X". Die anderen Vaselines auf diesem Album sind Stevie Jackson (Guitar), Bob Kildea (Bass) und Michael McGaughrin (Drums). Beim Label Rosary Music erschien 2014 das dritte und bisher letzte Album "V For Vaselines". Die Vaselines sind eine nette Punkband, yeah, irgendwie so wie Jonathan Richman und seine Modern Lovers eine nette Punkband waren. Im Jahr 1992 erschien bei Avalanche Records die Vaselines-Compilation "All The Stuff And More...", da ist alles von der ersten Vaselines-Phase drauf. Ein Must-have für alle Popfans! Frances McKee: I think Eugene, and he has said this in interviews, that he has lots of ideas for songs, but he didn't have much lyric-wise. I am more of the word person, I think, now. It's great fun to take a riff that he has, and talk about where we could take it, lyrically. I maybe start off a few ideas, and then it's ping-pong between us. Aktuell bestehen die Vaselines aus Frances McKee, Eugene Kelly, Michael McGaughrin, Graeme Smillie (Bass, Keyboards) und Carla Easton (Keyboards). So, und zum Abschluss einen kurzen Auszug aus einem Interview, dass Bob Dylan 1966 der Zeitschrift Playboy gab. Interviewer war Nat Hentoff. Bob Dylan: I do know what my songs are about. Nat Hentoff: And what's that? Bob Dylan: Oh, some are about four minutes, some are about five, and some, believe it or not, are about eleven or twelve.
