Der Tom Tom Club wurde 1981 von Tina Weymouth und Chris Frantz von der Band Talking Heads gegründet. Im selben Jahr erschien das Debütalbum "Tom Tom Club" bei Sire Records, das mit den Songs "Genius Of Love" und "Wordy Rappinghood" gleich 2 Hits enthielt. Neben Tina Weymouth (Bass, Vocals) und Chris Frantz (Drums) gehörten noch Tyrone Downie (Keyboards), Adrian Belew (Guitar), Monte Browne (Guitar), Uziah 'Sticky' Thompson (Percussion) und Tinas Schwestern Lani, Laura und Loric Weymouth (Vocals) zum Club. I'm in heaven / With the maven of funk mutation / Clinton's musicians such as Bootsy Collins / Raise expectations to a new intention / No one can sing / Quite like Smokey, Smokey Robinson / Wailin' and skankin' to Bob Marley / Reggae's expanding with Sly and Robbie. Bei Sire Records erschienen noch die Alben "Close To The Bone" 1983, "Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom" 1988 und "Dark Sneak Love Action" 1992. Die Besetzung des Clubs änderte sich eigentlich ständig, nur Tina Weymouth und Chris Frantz waren ständige Mitglieder. Weitere Hits hatte der Club mit den Songs "The Man With The Four Way Hips" 1983, "Suboceana" 1988 und "Sunshine And Ecstasy" 1992. Oops! Your mama said uh / Oops! Your mama said uh / Oops! Tyna Weymouth, Chris Frantz und Jerry Harrison veröffentlichten 1996 das Album "No Talking Just Heads" unter dem Bandnamen The Heads. David Byrne war darüber wenig erfreut. Egal. Vom Tom Tom Club sind seither noch die Alben "The Good The Bad And The Funky" 2000 und "Downtown Rockers" 2012 erschienen. Der Song "Genius Of Love" ist auf dem Debütalbum "Tom Tom Club" zu finden. Ich habe das Debütalbum als LP in meiner Sammlung, da kommt das schöne Cover von James Rizzi viel besser zur Geltung. Als CD wurde es 1988 bei Island Records erstmals wiederveröffentlicht. Den Rhythmus von "Genius Of Love" verwendete Grandmaster Flash 1982 in seinem Song "It’s Nasty (Genius Of Love)" und er ist auch Teil des Hits "Fantasy" 1995 von Mariah Carey. Ja, da kommen sicher eine Menge Tantiemen zusammen. Live ist der Tom Tom Club noch immer in der Popwelt unterwegs, die aktuelle Besetzung besteht aus Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, Bruce Martin (Keyboards, Percussion), Pablo Martin (Guitar) und Victoria Clamp (Vocals). Das Debütalbum des Clubs sollte in keiner Popsammlung fehlen. I love it! Die Talking Heads waren natürlich auch eine tolle Band. Ich hab mir von ihnen das Album "Talking Heads: 77" 1977 und das Live-Album "The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads" 1982 geleistet. Hört euch von den Talking Heads auf jedem Fall die Songs "Psycho Killer" 1977 und "Road To Nowhere" 1985 bei youtube an.
