Die Violent Femmes wurden 1980 von Gordon Gano (Vocals, Guitar), Brian Ritchie (Bass) und Victor DeLorenzo (Drums) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin gegründet. Bei Slash Records erschien 1983 das gleichnamige Debütalbum, das hauptsächlich in Australien und Neuseeland kommerziell punkten konnte. Naja, in den USA schaffte es das Album zumindest auf Platz 171. In Europa schafften die Violent Femmes den Einstieg in die Charts erst mit ihrem dritten Album "The Blind Leading The Naked" 1986. Im Jahr 1987 lösten sich die Violent Femmes aber zur allgemeinen Überraschung auf. Gordon Gano veröffentlichte 1987 mit der Gospel-Punk-Band The Mercy Seat bei Slash Records ein gleichnamiges Album und Brian Ritchie bei SST Records das Soloalbum "The Blend". Doch bereits 1989 kehrten die Violent Femmes in der Originalbesetzung zurück und veröffentlichten bei Slash Records das Album "3", das aber eigentlich bereits Album Numero 4 ist. In der Besetzung Gano, Ritchie und DeLorenzo erschien 1991 noch das Album "Why Do The Bird Sing", danach verließ Victor DeLorenzo die Band und neuer Drummer wurde Guy Hoffman. Victor DeLorenzo veröffentlichte 1990 bei Dali Records sein erstes Soloalbum "Peter Corey Sent Me", aktuell ist er mit der Band Nineteen Thirteen in der Popwelt unterwegs, die 2019 das Album "If You Like It, It's Good" veröffentlichte. Mit Guy Hoffman als Drummer veröffentlichten die Violent Femmes die Alben "New Times" 1994, "Rock!!!!!" 1995 und "Freak Magnet" 2000. Das bei Beyond Records erschienene Album "Freak Magnet" war das einzige Album der Violent Femmes, das es nicht mal in Australien in die Charts schaffte. Im Jahr 2002 kehrte Victor DeLorenzo nochmals zu den Violent Femmes zurück und blieb bis zur zweiten Auflösung der Band 2009, in dieser Zeit veröffentlichte die Band aber nur die 12“-Single "Crazy" bei The Secret Life Of Records. Gordon Gano verkaufte 2007 den von ihm geschriebenen Violent-Femmes-Song "Blister In The Sun" zu Werbezwecken an die Fastfood-Kette Wendy's, Brian Ritchie und Victor DeLorenzo waren darüber verärgert und 2009 löste sich die Band im Streit auf. Brian Ritchie: For the fans who rightfully are complaining about the Wendy's burger advertisement featuring "Blister in the Sun", Gordon Gano is the publisher of the song and Warners is the record company. When they agree to use it there's nothing the rest of the band can do about it, because we don't own the song or the recording. That's showbiz. Therefore when you see dubious or in this case disgusting uses of our music you can thank the greed, insensitivity and poor taste of Gordon Gano, it is his karma that he lost his songwriting ability many years ago, probably due to his own lack of self-respect as his willingness to prostitute our songs demonstrates. Neither Gordon (vegetarian) nor me (gourmet) eat garbage like Wendy's burgers. I can't endorse them because I disagree with corporate food on culinary, political, health, economic and environmental grounds. However, I see my life’s work trivialized at the hands of my business partner over and over again, although I have raised my objections numerous times. As disgusted as you are I am more so. Brian Ritchie gründete mit Martin Rotsey (Guitar), Jim Moginie (Guitar, Keyboards) und Rob Hirst (Drums, Percussion) die Surfband The Break, mit der er die beiden Alben "Church Of The Open Sky" 2010 und "Space Farm" 2013 veröffentlichte und Gordon Gano machte mit der Band Gordon Gano & The Ryans weiter. Doch 2013 hatte man sich wieder so weit versöhnt und Gano, Ritchie und DeLorenzo gingen ein drittes Mal als Violent Femmes an den Start. So ganz klappte es aber nicht mit dem Frieden und Victor DeLorenzo verließ die Band nach ein paar Monaten wieder. Victor DeLorenzo: It's always hard to write a eulogy for a lost loved one. In this case, I sadly lament the loss of a dream and an ideal that was once Violent Femmes. Neuer Drummer wurde Brian Viglione, der davor bei den Dresden Dolls getrommelt hatte. In dieser Besetzung erschien 2016 beim eigenen Label Add It Up Productions das Album "We Can Do Anything". Seither ist bei Add It Up Productions noch das Album "Hotel Last Resort" 2019 erschienen, die aktuelle Besetzung lautet Gordon Gano, Brian Ritchie und John Sparrow (Drums, Percussion, Backing Vocals). Der Song "Gimme The Car" erschien 1983 auf der 4-Song-EP "Ugly" und ist auch auf der 1993 bei Slash Records erschienenen Violent-Femmes-Compilation "Add It Up (1981-1993)" zu finden. Sehr empfehlenswert, yeah! Gordon Gano: I don't think I'm nostalgic at all. Some people tell me that they think back to times when they were in their teens and involved in a certain scene and that was the best time in their life. Ich hab in meine Sammlung von den Violent Femmes die Alben "Violent Femmes" 1983, "The Blind Leading The Naked" 1986, "Why Do Birds Sing?" 1991 und die Compilation "Add It Up (1981-1993)" aufgenommen. So, und weils gut nach den Violent Femmes passt, hört euch auch noch den Song "Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay" 1958 von Danny & The Juniors an. Danny & The Juniors waren Danny Rapp, Dave White, Frank Maffei und Joe Terranova aus Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, sie hatten mit den Songs "At The Hop" 1957 und "Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay" 1958 große Hits.
