Yeah, eine tolle Punkversion des Nancy Sinatra-Klassikers "These Boots Are Made For Walkin’". Pure Hell wurde 1974 von Stinker alias Kenny Gordon (Vocals), Chip Wreck alias Preston Morris III (Guitar), Lenny Still alias Kerry Boles (Bass) und Spider alias Michael Sanders (Drums) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania gegründet. Pure Hell war eine der ganz ganz wenigen Punkbands, die nur aus Schwarzen Musikern bestand und stark von den New York Dolls beeinflusst war, sowohl was die Musik als auch das Styling der Band betraff. Pure Hell veröffentlichten 1978 bei Golden Sphinx Records die Single "These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ / No Rules" und nahm das Album "Noise Addiction" auf, das aber erst 2006 bei Welfare Records das Licht der Popwelt erblickte. Kerry Boles spielte nach dem Ende von Pure Hell in der Band Butch Lust & The Hypocrites, von der ich die 4 Songs "Smashed Rats", "You’re Nothing But Make Up", "Nervousness And Anger" und "Degenerate World" kenne, die 1982 bei S.I.N. Records auf der Compilation "The Big Apple - Rotten To The Core" erschienen sind. Kerry Boles spielt Gitarre und schreibt sein Pseudonym nicht Lenny Still sondern Lenny Steel, eine Zeit lang hatte er auch die Schreibweise Lenny 'Steal' Boles in Verwendung. Pure Hell waren 1977 nach New York übersiedelt. Pure Hell played CBGB in '77 and hung around the NY scene, played the Lyceum in London, hung out with the Stooges, New York Dolls, and Johnny Thunders, and recorded with Motörhead. (…) While Bad Brains did not have any direct knowledge of Pure Hell when they started out and likely never saw them play, they became aware of them in their early years, and it was encouraging to them to see another all-black punk band had already blazed a trail. Die Journalistin Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff schreibt in ihrem Artikel "Why Is The History Of Punk Music So White?": The usual images you see of the punk era, which developed throughout the 1970s, portray it as ugly, raw and beautiful. Faces crisscrossed with safety pins. Black eyeliner bleeding into caked-white faces. Leather jackets and bright manes gelled into peaks. But while the multi-coloured hairdye is ubiquitous, another type of colour has often been noticeably absent. There's no denying that the UK punk scene was, in part, driven by the anger and isolation felt by the white working class. But punk music is not the sole property of whiteness, even though to people of my generation it may appear that way at first glance. Like many facets of pop culture, its historical image has been whitewashed: when you think of punk's history, it's bands like The Clash, the Sex Pistols and the Ramones that immediately spring to mind. But the 'spirit' of punk is present, and has always been present, in music made by black people too, from obvious co-conspirators Bad Brains through to bar-spitting rude boys and today's radical, no-fucks-given rappers like Young Thug and artists like FKA twigs. Zu erwähnen wäre da auch die Band Death aus Detroit, Michigan, die aus den Brüdern Bobby (Vocals, Bass), David (Guitar) und Dannis Hackney (Drums) bestand. In der Zeit ihres Bestehens veröffentlichten Death nur die Single "Politicians In My Eyes / Keep On Knocking", sie erschien 1976 bei Tryangle Records. Erst 2009 erschien bei Drag City Records das Debütalbum "...For The Whole World To See", die 7 Songs darauf hat die Band alle bereits Mitte der 70er Jahre aufgenommen. Death wurde von Drag City Records wiederentdeckt, als die Söhne von Bobby Hackney, nämlich Julian (Guitar), Urian (Drums) und Bobby Hackney Jr. (Vocals, Percussion), mit Paul Comegno (Guitar) und Steve Williams (Bass) 2008 die Band Rough Francis gründeten und Songs von Death coverten. Im Jahr 2009 spielten dann Death selbst einige Reunion-Konzerte. Die Gitarre von David Hackney, der 2000 an Lungenkrebs verstorben war, spielte nun Bobbie Duncan. Nachdem Drag City Records noch die beiden Alben "Spiritual / Mental / Physical" 2011 und "III" 2014 mit alten Songs der Band füllte, erschien 2015 bei Tryangle Records das Album "N.E.W." mit neuen Songs. Wow! So lange kann es dauern, bis man seinen Weg zu den Hörer*innen findet, ausgenommen natürlich die, die damals live mit dabei waren. Die Brüder Hackney gründeten nach dem Ende von Death die Acid-Rock-Band The 4th Movement, die Anfang der 80er Jahre 2 Alben veröffentlichte. David Hackney zog sich 1982 aus der Popwelt zurück und Bobby und Dannis machten mit der Reggae-Band Lambsbread weiter. Der Song "These Boots Are Made For Walkin’" ist auf der 2016 bei Rough Trade erschienenen Compilation "Rough Trade 40 Years 40 Covers" zu finden. Darauf covern z.B. Damned "Help" von den Beatles, die Raincoats "Lola" von den Kinks, die Vaselines "You Think You’re A Man" von Divine, die White Stripes "Jolene" von Dolly Parton oder Melt-Banana "We Will Rock You" von Queen.
