Avant-Glam-Rock, yeah. Der Song "Divine" stammt vom Debütalbum "Antony & The Johnsons", das 2000 bei Durtro Records erschienen ist. Der Song ist natürlich eine Hommage an die Drag Queen Divine alias Harris Glenn Milstead. Antony ist transgender, sie wurde 1971 als Antony Hegarty in Chichester, England geboren. Die Familie übersiedelte 1977 nach Amsterdam, Holland und 1981 schließlich in die San Francisco Bay Area nach Kalifornien. Im Jahr 1990 übersiedelte Antony nach New York, diesmal ohne Eltern, wo sie 1992 mit Johanna Constantine und Psychotic Eve die Avantgarde-Drag-Theatertruppe The Blacklips Performance Cult gründete, die ihre ersten Auftritte in der Crow Bar absolvierte, aber schon bald fix jeden Montag im Pyramid Club auftrat. Bereits bei diesen Auftritten sang Antony Songs wie "Cripple And The Starfish", "Blue Angel" oder "Hitler In My Heart", die auch auf dem Debütalbum "Antony & The Johnsons" zu finden sind. Die Band gründete sie dann 1995 und nannte sie The Johnsons nach der Transgender-Rights-Aktivistin Marsha P. Johnson. Beim Debütalbum bestand Antony & The Johnsons aus Antony (Vocals, Piano), Charles Nieland (Guitar), François Gehin (Bass), Todd Cohen (Drums), Baby Dee (Harp), Cady Finlayson (Violin), Liz Maranville (Violin), Vicky Leavitt (Cello), Mariana Davenport (Flute), William Basinski (Clarinet) und Barb Morrison (Clarinet, Saxophone). Die Stimme von Antony, die öfters mit den Stimmen von Sängerinnen wie Billie Holiday oder Nina Simone verglichen wird, sorgte bald für zahlreiche prominente Bewunderer wie Philip Glass, Lou Reed, Marc Almond, Rufus Wainwright etcetera und Antony war als Gastsänger*in sehr begehrt. Antony & The Johnsons bekamen einen Vertrag bei Rough Trade Records, wo die Alben "I Am A Bird Now" 2004, "The Crying Light" 2009 und "Swanlights" 2010 sowie das Livealbum "Cut The World" 2012 erschienen. Das Livealbum wurde in Kopenhagen, Dänemark mitgeschnitten, Antony & The Johnsons wurden bei diesem Konzert vom Danish National Chamber Orchestra begleitet. Antony löste die Band schließlich 2015 auf, änderte seinen Namen in Anohni und veröffentlichte 2016 bei Rough Trade Records das Album "Hopelessness", das er mit Hudson Mohawke und Oneohtrix Point Never co-produzierte. Hudson Mohawke alias Ross Birchard ist ein schottischer Musiker, Produzent und DJ, der neben zahlreichen Singles und EPs bei Warp Records die beiden Alben "Butter" 2009 und "Lantern" 2015 veröffentlicht hat. Oneohtrix Point Never alias Daniel Lopatin ist ein us-amerikanischer Experimental- und Elektronikmusiker, der die Musik zu Filmen wie "The Bling Ring" 2013, "Partisan" 2015, "Good Time" 2017 oder "Uncut Gems" 2019 komponierte. Zuletzt erschien von Anohni 2023 bei Rough Trade das Album "My Back Was A Bridge For You To Cross" unter dem Namen Anohni & The Johnsons. Die neuen Johnsons sind Martin Slattery (Piano, Organ, Saxophone, Percussion), Jimmy Hogarth (Guitar), Leo Abrahams (Guitar), Sam Dixon (Bass), Chris Vatalaro (Drums), William Basinski (Saxophone), Alex Sopp (Flute), Rob Moose (Violin, Viola) und Gabriel Cabezas (Cello). Antony bzw. Anohni & The Johnsons sollten in keiner Popsammlung fehlen, yeah. Ich habe von Antony & The Johnsons die Alben "Antony & The Johnsons", "I Am A Bird Now", "The Crying Light" und "Cut The World" in meine Sammlung aufgenommen. Anohni: I was never going to become a beautiful, passable woman, and I was never going to be a man. It's a quandary. But the trans condition is a beautiful mystery; it's one of nature's best ideas.
