Calvin Johnson: "Sorry Entertainer" (2004) |
I'm a sorry entertainer / I'm a loner / I'm a sorry entertainer / Drove those demons / Out of my head / With an organ and a pencil full of lead / And when I'm dead / I'd like to have it said / He drove those demons out of his head. Beat Happening veröffentlichten die Alben "Beat Happening" 1985, "Jamboree" 1988, "Black Candy" 1989, "Dreamy" 1991 und "You Turn Me On" 1992. Von 1985 bis 1989 war Calvin Johnson mit Tobi Vail als The Go Team in der Popwelt unterwegs. Tobi Vail: The Go Team was about process. Sometimes we'd deliberately leave stuff out to incite participation in the listener. "Donna Parker Pop", our first K release, featured all instrumentals but included the statement 'Make up your own words and sing along' - and people did. We recorded with some of those people later. On the one hand we were trying to demystify music and encourage people to play songs in public - if they wanted to. On the other hand, we actually liked what we sounded like, and we hated most of the pro-sounding jam bands/shredding metal-punk bands that played parties in Olympia. We embraced chaos and rejected mastery. Mitte der 90er Jahre gründete Calvin Johnson mit Brian Weber (Guitar), Sash Sunday (Bass), Todd Ranslow (Bass), Heather Dunn (Drums), Scott Plouf (Drums) und Tae Won Yu (Bongos) die Band Dub Narcotic Sound System, die 1994 mit dem Minialbum "Hands On The Dial" startete und sich 2004 mit dem Album "Degenerate Introduction" wieder aus der Popwelt verabschiedete. Ebenfalls Mitte der 90er gründete Calvin Johnson die Band The Halo Benders, die bei K Records die Alben "God Don't Make No Junk" 1994, "Don't Tell Me Now" 1996 und "The Rebels Not In" 1998 veröffentlichte. Die Halo Benders waren Calvin Johnson, Steve Fisk (Keyboards), Doug Martsch (Guitar, Vocals, Bass, Keyboards, Percussion), Wayne Flower (Bass, Drums) und Ralf Youtz (Drums, Guitar). Im Jahr 2002 veröffentlichte Calvin Johnson sein erstes Soloalbum "What Was Me", seither sind von ihm noch die Soloalben "Before The Dream Faded..." 2005 und "A Wonderful Beast" 2018 erschienen. Das Album "This Party Is Just Getting Started" 2016, eigentlich auch ein Soloalbum, erschien unter dem Pseudonym Selector Dub Narcotic. Zwischendurch gabs noch Veröffentlichungen mit kurzlebigen Bandprojekten wie Heather Calvin And Laura, The Dead Presidents, Calvin Johnson & Sons Of Soil, The Microphones, The Hive Dwellers und Calvin Johnson & The Snow-Tones. Calvin Johnson: My name is Calvin Johnson and I don't remember if the bands had names but there have been several. Some of them are only for an afternoon. Some had one show. The first band that I had that played more than one show was called Cool Rays and we played shows for, maybe, six months here in Olympia and then dissolved.
